The Pillersee is a mountain lake in the northern Limestone Alps in the state of Tyrol .

geography

The Pillersee is located in the Pillerseetal valley of the same name near the municipality of St. Ulrich am Pillersee at 835 m above sea level. Tributaries are several streams that arise in the adjacent Loferer Steinberge and the Kitzbühel Alps . The lake drains through the Haselbach / Grieselbach (Loferbach, Strubache) , which also flows in as such, then passes the Öfenschlucht and then flows into the Saalach in Lofer . The depth of the lake is 7 m at its deepest point.

The Pillersee owes its formation to a landslide about 15,000 years ago, which interrupted the drainage at the level of the Öfenschlucht and thus dammed the Pillersee.

Like many mountain lakes in the Northern Limestone Alps, the Pillersee tends to silt up due to the regular entry of floating debris. Currently the lake has a length of 1.6 km and a maximum width of about 300 m. Near its northern end is the Church of St. Adolari .

Name and story

The origin of its name is not exactly clear, but it is assumed that the name derives from "Pillern". "Pilling" is a local dialect expression that describes a phenomenon that usually occurs in spring or during storms, when the lake begins to roar in a peculiar manner or even to "pill". The lake was first mentioned in writing in 1151 as "Bileresse" in a certificate of ownership from Pope Eugene III. for the Rott Monastery , which was wealthy here.

use

The lake is known as a bathing water and among anglers for its wealth of trout. However, the water temperature hardly rises above 20 ° C even in summer. There is a cycle path.
