Dirk Kaftan (* 1971 in Marburg ) is a German conductor . He is general music director of the city of Bonn and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn .

Live and act

Kaftan grew up in Wittlich , in the Eifel and in Canada . At the age of 18 he was a répétiteur at the Stadttheater Trier . He then attended the University of Music Detmold , a sound engineer on -Studies. After various intermediate positions, he worked as the first conductor and deputy general music director at the Graz Opera. From 2009 to 2014 he was general music director in Augsburg . At the beginning of 2013 he decided to move back to Graz in the same position and worked in Augsburg and Graz during the 2013–2014 season. On June 23, 2013, Kaftan made his debut as chief conductor of Graz with the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra, soloists and the opera choir with Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder .

Kaftan has made guest appearances at numerous houses in and outside Europe, and he has also recorded a number of rarely performed works on sound carriers .

In 2015 he was awarded the Karl Böhm Interpretation Prize by the State of Styria of the Republic of Austria for his services to the further development of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra .

Kaftan has been General Music Director of the City of Bonn and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn since the 2017/2018 season . He made his debut with the Beethoven Orchestra as part of the Beethovenfest . Its first premiere at Theater Bonn was the production Penthesilea , directed by Peter Konwitschny . Again and again, the orchestra should perform under caftan in unusual places and thus reach an audience outside the concert hall. With the newly founded series BaseCamp Neue Musik , he let the musicians play for the first time on May 12, 2018 in BaseCamp Bonn , an indoor campsite. In the first year of his function as general music director, he managed to double the number of visitors in the concert area.
