Silke Hassler (born October 11, 1969 in Klagenfurt , Carinthia) is an Austrian writer .

Life

Silke Hassler studied literature in Vienna and London, where she completed her studies in 1998 with a thesis on the Austrian-English artist Jakov Lind . She returned to Vienna and initially worked as a dramaturge at the Neue Oper Wien . In 1999 she wrote her first libretto "Azrael", a tango opera. She wrote her first commissioned work for the Neue Oper Wien, the libretto “ Endlich Ende ”. Hassler has been working as a freelance writer since 2005, writing plays and essays. She has received several awards for her plays, which have been translated into 12 languages ​​and performed on stages in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. The 2007 together withPeter Turrini wrote the folk operetta " Each his own " was filmed in 2010 under the title " Maybe in Another Life ".

Silke Hassler is considered a socially critical writer. She often uses the technique of tragic comedy to show the unfulfilled longings and existential fears of her characters, mostly women from marginalized social circles. Provocative sharpness and pointed dialog humor, plus unconventional plots that are not afraid of sexual taboos, are defining elements in Hassler's dramatic work. In 2004 she was "Author in residence" at the University of New Mexico .

Silke Hassler lives in Retz / Lower Austria, where, in addition to her literary work, she devotes herself to the care of rare rose varieties.
