The series revolves around the Viennese shipping police ( maritime and electricity police ). If the SOKO Kitzbühel mainly deals with cases in alpine regions, the Vienna SOKO is responsible for investigating and combating crimes that are committed on and on the Danube or its tributaries. The special commission's areas of activity are Vienna, Lower and Upper Austria, as well as eastern countries near the border on the Danube. The Kieberer (police officers) operate down the Danube to about Bratislava and arrest one or the other criminal there.

Major Carl Ribarski, District Inspector Simon Steininger and District Inspector Penny Lanz form the SOKO Donau investigative team, which is led by Colonel Dr. Henriette Wolf is headed. The special commission is based in the modern Hauptwache on Wiener Handelskai , right next to the Reichsbrücke . This is also where the interrogation room and the forensic laboratory, where forensic scientist Dr. Franziska Beck and forensics specialist Franz Wohlfahrt work. Their findings often trigger the first investigations.

In addition to the SOKO Leipzig , the first offshoot of the SOKO 5113 series , the SOKO Donau is another successful SOKO series. It is shown in 15 countries, in addition to broadcasts in Germany and Austria also in Italy under the name Squadra Speciale Vienna , in Hungary as Dunai zsaruk and in the Czech Republic as Říční policie - Vídeň . SOKO Donau or SOKO Vienna is a co-production by SATEL and ALMARO in cooperation with ORF and ZDF, produced with the support of the Austrian Television Fund, the Vienna Film Fund and the states of Lower Austria and Upper Austria.

In 2008, the fourth season was shot with locations in Vienna , Lower Austria , Upper Austria and, for the first time, also in Styria . In addition to the 15 episodes, there was a 90-minute special film. The broadcast of the 4th season began on ORF on October 15, 2008, on ZDF on October 17, 2008. In the following autumn, the 15 episodes of the 5th season, which were filmed in spring and summer 2009, were first broadcast on October 13 2009 on ORF and from October 16, 2009 on ZDF. In 2010 the 6th season was shot, again with locations in Vienna, Lower Austria and Upper Austria. The first broadcast of 11 of the 13 episodes took place on ORF from September 28, 2010, the entire season on ZDF from January 10, 2011. Two episodes of the 6th season (At the Limit and Blood Relatives) were broadcast on ORF in August 2011 and with it the 7th season preceded. This was filmed from the beginning of April to mid-September 2011. The 14 episodes were broadcast on ORF from August 30, 2011 to January 3, 2012. The 7th season began broadcasting on ZDF on September 28, 2012. The 8th season was filmed again from the beginning of April to mid-October 2012 at locations in Vienna, Lower Austria and Upper Austria. The 100th episode (family ties) was also on the schedule for the eighth season . On April 3, 2013 filming began for the 9th season with another 16 episodes. The first broadcast took place on October 15, 2013 in ORFeins in prime time.

The SOKO Danube building is actually the DDSG ship station Wien-Praterkai and houses a. a. the head office of DDSG Blue Danube (Handelskai 265), one of the two subsidiary companies of DDSG . The shipping center also serves as an entrance for tourists visiting Vienna from Danube cruise liners and is located on the right bank, downstream near the Reichsbrücke. The scenes in the police station (office, laboratory, interrogation room, detention) are filmed in this building.

On November 1, 2016, SOKO Donau was broadcast for the first time in feature length with the episode We Are Many . Dietrich Siegl left the series in the 14th season, Brigitte Kren succeeded him from the fifth episode of the season. In August 2019 it was announced that Andreas Kiendl will succeed Michael Steinocher as an investigator from the 15th season.

On November 2, 2019, the crossover episode The Fourth Man with SOKO Leipzig was broadcast for the first time on ORF, and on November 8, 2019 on ZDF. After we are many (2016) for the second time in feature length. The script was based on a true story about the circle of Viennese businesswoman Rudolfine Steindling , called the "Rote Fini".
