prehistory

Today's DDSG passenger shipping company DDSG Blue Danube emerged from the DDSG Donaureisen , which existed between 1991 and 1995 . This in turn was the successor company for passenger shipping to the First Danube Steamship Company , privatized in 1990 , which was founded in 1829 and was the largest inland shipping company in the world at the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . After the First World War , however, the fleet was divided up among the successor states of the Danube Monarchy, which greatly decimated the size and profitability of the company.

In 1991 the DDSG was privatized and divided. The goods transport area was combined and sold in DDSG-Cargo . However, no suitable buyer could be found for the loss-making passenger shipping industry, which meant that the ships in this area were given to various companies. A large part of the passenger ships was taken over by DDSG Blue Danube Schiffahrt GmbH, which continues this business area. The new company concentrates on the core zones Vienna and Wachau - the long-distance service Passau – Linz – Vienna was taken over by other shipping companies, in this case the Danube shipping companies Wurm & Köck and Donau Touristik .

Foundation of the DDSG Blue Danube

In 1995, DDSG Donaureisen was taken over by the Austrian Transport Office and the Vienna Harbor , each with 50 percent. Since then, trips to the Danube have been made again with five of their own ships in the core zones of Vienna and the Wachau . In addition, the routes Vienna – Passau – Vienna ( Donau Touristik , Kaiserin Elisabeth ), Vienna – Budapest – Vienna ( Mahart Passnave , hydrofoil ) and Vienna – Bratislava – Vienna ( Central Danube , TwinCityLiner ) are operated with partner companies. For the last named destination , DDSG Blue Danube is not only a partner, but also carries out the operations with booking and ship personnel.

In 2007 the tour ship “Schlögen” expanded the DDSG fleet to six excursion ships.

Boat trips Vienna

In Vienna the three excursion boats Vindobona , Vienna and Blue Danube (formerly Schlögen) are available, which depart five times a day for sightseeing tours on the Danube and the Danube Canal . The Hundertwasser ship Vindobona , the Vienna renovated in 2005 and the Schlögen ship renovated in 2014 , renamed the Blue Danube , set off on tours from Schwedenplatz down the Danube Canal towards the Freudenau power station . On the "big" Danube, the ships travel upstream to the DDSG shipping center (Reichsbrücke station) and on to the Nussdorf lock , where they enter the Danube Canal again. After a 3-hour tour, the tour ends again at Schwedenplatz.

In addition to the Sunday excursion “Vienna – Dürnstein – Vienna”, the DDSG and its flagship Admiral Tegetthoff offer several trips from Vienna to the Donau-Auen National Park to Orth an der Donau and Hainburg .

From June 2006 to winter 2018, the city express connection Vienna – Bratislava was used with the two aluminum catamarans Twin City Liner . They set off up to five times a day in each direction for the 75-minute Danube journey from “City to City”. In March 2019, the two catamarans were replaced by a larger one. This now runs the city connection Vienna-Bratislava three times a day.

The two DDSG ships Wachau and Prinz Eugen sail 36 km of the river valley. Three departures are available daily from April to October; There are stops in Krems an der Donau , Dürnstein , Spitz , Emmersdorf an der Donau and Melk .

Wachau and Prinz Eugen in the Melker Altarm

Since the company was founded in 1996, DDSG Blue Danube has concentrated on the core areas of Vienna and Wachau.

City trips to Bratislava and Passau, for example, are also offered .

DDSG Schifffahrtszentrum - Vienna, Handelskai 265

The shipping center on Wiener Handelskai near the Reichsbrücke was built as a replacement for the DDSG headquarters in downtown Vienna. With spacious offices, its own print shop and restaurant, the company wanted to be prepared for the growing passenger shipping. However, the costs of the multi-million dollar project rose many times over than planned.

After the end of the DDSG Danube trips in 1995, the office building was used significantly less than before. In 2006, the DDSG Blue Danube, which had previously set up its company headquarters in Friedrichstrasse at the Austrian Tourist Office, decided to return to the traditional city center on Handelskai. From autumn 2006 the former passenger hall will be available as office and sales area for the DDSG Blue Danube.
