Danube shipping Ardagger

The Donauschiffahrt Ardagger specialized in shipping in the Strudengau . When the state-owned DDSG Donaureisen was privatized in 1995, the line operation between Melk and Linz ceased. The new line, which was to be operated by a private shipping company, was put out to tender: Brandner Schiffahrt and Donauschiffahrt Ardagger were up for discussion. The decision was made to use Ardagger. Parallel to this, so-called Strudengau tours with the MS Donaunixe and MS Maria have been carried out since the 1980s . The shipowners sold the latter to Fritz Leitner. Finally, the tour ship Donaunixe , which runs tours and charter trips for up to 160 people, was handed over to Leitner.

Danube tourism

Donau Touristik: MS Kaiserin Elisabeth (built in 1995)

Between 1999 and 2003, the cycle tour operator Donau Touristik chartered the excursion boat MS Admiral Tegetthoff from DDSG Blue Danube for 3-day Vienna – Passau – Vienna boat trips . The program was so well received that a separate ship was finally acquired for this destination: the MS Kaiserin Elisabeth, built in 1987 . The former owner of the ship was the Köln-Düsseldorfer Rheinschiffahrt AG, which operated the ship under the name Rüdesheim am Rhein . At the end of 2009, the ship was sold to the Ukrainian shipping company Chervona Ruda Cruise Company and, after being overhauled, was used as Rosa Victoria on the Dnepr .

The successor of the same name, built in 1995, has been used in excursion traffic on the Danube since April 2010. The former Rhine Queen was built at the German inland shipyard in Tangermünde and given a general overhaul by the new owner.

Wilhelm Stift - MS City of Vienna

W. Foundation: MS City of Vienna

When the two wheelboats Stadt Wien and Stadt Passau were up for sale by DDSG Donaureisen, the city of Vienna met a clearly better fate. It was bought by the mayor of Tulln , Wilhelm Stift, who had it converted and moored to the Tulln Donaulände as a restaurant ship. On weekends, however, the engines start and the ship sets sail for trips into the romantic Wachau Valley to Melk.

The city of Passau is different : It was first sold to Passau, where it bobbed around without being used until 2001. Then it was bought by the Hungarian K. Földi, who had it transferred to Hungary under his own steam and started renovation work there. But a little later the new shipowner was found murdered; the fate of the ship anchored at Budapest's Elisabeth Bridge remained uncertain for a long time. In 2005/2006 the ship was resold to Mr. Ronai within Hungary. It ended up in the repair yard in Komarno (SK), where it was completely renovated. The ship has been making day trips from Budapest since August 2006.

Danube shipping Wurm & Köck

Wurm & Köck: MS Regina Danubia

The shipowners Erich Wurm, Günter Köck and Ludwig Wurm have been shipping on the Upper Danube around Passau for around 30 years. Wurm & Köck have expanded their fleet to a high-performance company with 12 units. After managing director Günter Köck retired in 2005, the new managing directors are Erich Wurm, Margit Reischl-Noé and Florian Noé.

The Wurm & Köck fleet has been constantly renovated in recent years. Particularly interesting excursion boats are the MS Anton Bruckner and MS Regina Danubia in royal golden style and the MS Stadt Linz, renovated in 2005/2006 and decorated in dark blue . The latest gem is the former MS Danube , which has been redesigned with countless Swarovski stones for 4.6 million euros , which now travels the Danube between Passau and Linz under the name Kristallschiff . The ship was christened on May 7, 2007 by the ex-finance minister's wife Fiona Swarovski (actually Fiona Pacifico Griffini-Grasser, née Winter) in Passau.

Danube cruises

Since the opening of the Main-Danube Canal, the fleet of Danube cruise ships has grown steadily. For 2007, 113 ships were already registered.

The offer ranges from two-day short trips to trips from Passau to the Black Sea and back. Well-known shipping companies and providers are Arosa and Deilmann (went bankrupt in 2009), Phönixreisen and Nickotours. The ships are mostly 4-5 star ships. The companies often let the hotel ships sail under foreign flags or hire workers from low-wage countries because they can minimize expenses.

Accidents

  • Two ships collided on the Danube in Budapest on the night of May 29th to 30th, 2019. An excursion ship with 35 people on board capsized and sank. In the accident at least seven people were killed. More than twelve passengers are still missing. Apparently the Viking Sigyn from Viking River Cruises was also involved .
