Viking River Cruises AG is a global provider of river cruises . The company's headquarters are in Basel , Switzerland . Until the end of 2013 there was a German branch in Cologne , Viking Flusskreuzfahrten GmbH . It was closed because the company's strategy is to focus on the more lucrative English-speaking markets. Viking River Cruises is one of the world's largest river cruise companies. In 2006 it had sales of over $ 200 million. Worldwide there are 1700 employees on board and ashore.

Companies

Torstein Hagen, later General Director and President of the Board of Directors (as of end of 2019), founded Viking River Cruises in Russia in 1997 .

In its first business year, the company operated four ships on various Russian rivers. 1999–2001 followed a new building program with eight river cruisers. In January 2000, Viking also took over KD Deutsche Flusskreuzfahrten with its nine ships from Cologne-Düsseldorfer and expanded the range to include Ukrainian and French rivers as well as the Danube , Elbe , Rhine , Main and Moselle . In 2001 the company moved to the USA with the opening of an office in Los Angeles. 2004 launched the first Viking river cruise ship on the Yangtze River in China. In October 2006 the Egyptian Nile was added. In Egypt, Viking River Cruises cooperated with Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts and used the Mövenpick M / S Royal Lotus as a Nile cruise ship for its guests , and from November 2007 the Mövenpick M / S Royal Lily . In the meantime, there are no more Mövenpick ships on the road for Viking River Cruises in Egypt.

In 2006 two new ships went into service: in February 2006 the Viking Century Su for trips on the Yangtze and in March 2006 the Viking Helvetia for use on the Rhine.

The Viking Legend sailed in May 2009 for the US -Markt the rivers Rhine, Main and Danube. According to the shipping company , the Viking Legend is the first inland cruise ship with diesel-electric propulsion in this sailing area to have around 20 percent less fuel consumption and operate with low noise.

The Viking Mekong was designed as the largest and best ship on the Mekong. It has been sailing rivers in Vietnam and Cambodia since January 2010 and has deluxe cabins and suites for 120 passengers. In addition, the Viking company operated river cruises on Lake Nasser in Egypt between 2009 and 2018 . As on the Nile, the company cooperated with Mövenpick and offered a river cruise on the Mövenpick M / S Prince Abbas .

In mid-September 2008, Viking River Cruises won an important legal dispute. The 1st Chamber of Commerce of the Regional Court of Cologne ruled that Viking Flusskreuzfahrten GmbH is the sole owner of the rights to the KD trademark for the river cruises sector. Thus, KD AG , which had used the brand for its river cruise line, was defeated (AZ: 81 O 223/07).

In spring 2013, Klaus Zimmer and Alfonso Escobar took over the management of Viking Flusskreuzfahrten GmbH from Guido Laukamp, ​​who left the company. In 2015, the offshore division Viking Ocean Cruises started with the first ship, the Viking Star . The fleet is expected to grow to eight ships by 2022.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , Viking River Cruises announced the temporary cessation of operations until May 2020.

Cruises on several continents

Cruises are offered in Europe , Russia / Ukraine , Egypt and People's Republic of China . The main rivers in Europe are the Rhine , Elbe , Main , Danube , Moselle , Seine , Dnepr , Volga , Rhone and Douro . The Main-Danube Canal is also used to connect the river system of the Rhine with the Danube . In North Africa the Nile and the Nasser Sea are navigated. In China, Viking passenger ships are in use on the Yangtze , in Southeast Asia on the Irrawaddy and the Mekong . The focus of the trips are the landscapes and cultural assets. Accordingly, numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites are included in the timetables and programs.

In Europe, the Viking River Cruises fleet mainly consists of almost identical ships of one series, the Viking Longships , which have been delivered since 2012. In 2018, 48 ships of this series were in service, and six more were added in 2019. From KfW IPEX-Bank's financing package for these twelve vehicles, it can be concluded that each ship cost around 24 million euros.
