The cabin passenger ships of the series of the Viking Longships are river and canal inland passenger motor ships of larger design of the shipping company Viking River Cruises . The series is named after the working title of the Neptun shipyard in Rostock . So far, the series comprises 54 ships (as of 2019) . All Viking Longships have names from Nordic mythology and are registered in Basel .

Viking Prestige , the direct predecessor of the Viking Longships

After sufficient experience had been gained with the Viking Legend, built in 2009 by the shipbuilding and development company Tangermünde, with the diesel-electric propulsion system used for the first time on river cruise ships , Viking River Cruises decided to have this energy-saving propulsion system installed in their next new ship. The Neptun shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde received the construction contract with the option for two more ships . From November 23, 2010, an almost identical ship, the Viking Prestige , was built there , but in contrast to the sister ship, four generators were installed instead of three for better load distribution. When the keel was laid , the shipping company announced the shipyard order for four more ships, which should be delivered in spring 2012. Under the project name Viking Longships, the shipping company and shipyard, together with the Norwegian ship architects Yran & Storbraaten and the interior designers from Rottet Studios, Los Angeles, developed a completely new type of ship that had a significantly lower water displacement compared to its predecessor with a larger usable area. The keel of the type ship was laid on May 3, 2011 under construction number S.521. The ship, which was completed on February 10, 2012, was delivered to Viking River Cruises the following month. Since names from Norse mythology had been provided for all ships in the series , the first built was given the name of Odin, the father of the gods .

Construction, delivery, new building planning

Six ships were delivered in 2012, ten followed in 2013. By June 2014, another 14 longships were registered by Viking River Cruises AG in Basel.

Of these 30 ships to date, 25 were built at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock; there the ships are manufactured in section construction in the 245 m long hall 8 . The fully welded hulls are lowered into the water with a ship lift , where the final construction takes place. After a few test drives on the Baltic Sea, the glass surfaces in the bow area and in the lower and middle decks are clad with wood. If the sea is expected to be calm, the ships sail under their own power over the Kiel Canal along the East Frisian Islands to the IJsselmeer . The destination of the transfer trip is usually Arnhem , where the ships are equipped with the necessary inventory by the shipping company.

For capacity reasons , the ships Viking Alsvin , Viking Bestla , Viking Eistla and Viking Ingvi were planned for the Meyer Werft in Papenburg and manufactured there. The production of the Viking Lif was also subsequently relocated to Papenburg, but the ship retained its hull number S.543 from the Neptun shipyard, which had already been assigned.

In addition to two ships that are to be specially designed for use on the Elbe, the shipping company has announced eleven further longships for 2015. The financing package from KfW IPEX-Bank for this order was EUR 288.9 million over a term of 90 months . In the spring of 2016, another six newbuildings from the Neptun shipyard are to be put into service. There are also options for six units.

In October 2017, six more ships were ordered for delivery in 2019.

Mass ship christenings

The Viking Longships were christened at ceremonies at which several ships were christened. The first of these events took place on March 21, 2012 when the ships Viking Odin and Viking Idun were christened in Amsterdam and at the same time Viking Freya and Viking Njord in Rostock.

The naming ceremony on March 20, 2013 comprised ten ships and was recognized as the record "The Most Ships Inaugurated in One Day by One Company" and entered in the Guinness Book of Records . In Amsterdam, the Viking Bragi , Viking Aegir , Viking Skadi and Viking Embla were baptized and in Rostock the Viking Forseti , Viking Tor , Viking Var , Viking Atla , Viking Rinda and Viking Jarl .

In March 2014, made ship christenings of a total of 18 units. On March 17th, the nine Viking Longships Viking Alsvin , Viking Baldur , Viking Bestla , Viking Delling , Viking Eistla , Viking Gullveig , Viking Ingvi , Viking Lif and Viking Magni were christened in Amsterdam . On March 18, the Viking Buri , Viking Hermod and Viking Heimdal received their names in Avignon in a celebration and on the same day in Rostock Viking Hlin , Viking Idi , Viking Kara and Viking Kvasir . The two shorter ships Viking Torgil and Viking Hemming were christened in Porto on March 21st .

On March 24, 2015 ten longships were christened at the same time - eight in Amsterdam and two in Rostock. Viking Eir , Viking Gefjon , Viking Lofn , Viking Mani , Viking Modi , Viking Skirnir , Viking Ve and Viking Vidar were christened in Amsterdam, Viking Mimir and Viking Vili in Rostock, where at the same time two other smaller ships of the shipping company for use on the Elbe were baptized. Godparents were selected employees of Viking River Cruises.

Six other units were christened on March 19, 2019: Viking Ullur and Viking Sigyn in Warnemünde, Viking Tir and Viking Vali in Brunsbüttel and Viking Sigrun and Viking Einar in Basel.

The cruises with the ships of the series are offered by Viking River Cruises exclusively on the English-speaking tourism market. The shipping company initially used the ships delivered first on the Rhine , Main and Danube . Since spring 2014 the Moselle , Rhone , Saône , Dordogne , Garonne and Gironde have also been used. The four ships Viking Buri , Forseti , Hermod and Heimdal intended for the French sailing areas were transferred to their new locations in early February with dock ships . In addition, in March 2014, specifically for use on the were Douro built Viking Hemming and Viking Torgil put into operation, similar to the Longships visually, but are markedly shorter with 79.85 meters. With the Viking Osfrid and the Viking Helgrim , the Duero fleet now consists of four ships.

Viking Longships are four-deck cabin ships whose design was developed by the Norwegian architects Yran & Storbraaten and the Rottet Studios in Los Angeles. The novel shape of the foredeck , in which the bow was extended almost bluntly above the waterline , gives this series an unmistakable appearance. The hull consists of welded steel plates on frames and is divided into seven watertight compartments with bulkheads to protect against uncontrollable ingress of water . The double floor is interrupted in the areas of the engine rooms.

The ships have 95 double cabins in eight different categories. They have a floor area between 12.5 and 41  and are each equipped with a double bed, a shower room and a large flat screen TV. On the main and upper deck, the cabins have either a French balcony or a veranda . The accommodations for the 45 crew members are located aft on the lower deck. In the bow of the main deck which is galley to which the buffet restaurant followed. Above the kitchen on the upper deck is the open "Aquavit terrace", which was equipped with half-height glass walls all around. The transition area to the viewing lounge, in which the bar is also located, is designed like a winter garden . To protect the wind from the wind, this area can be closed at the front with sliding walls. The on-board bar is located in the viewing lounge with upholstered furniture and small tables. The entrance hall extends over the main and upper deck and is designed like an atrium . Ceiling glazing means that there is no need for lamps in this area in daylight. In addition to the reception and the on-board shop, an internet corner and a library were set up there. The main and upper decks can also be reached by passengers with walking difficulties using an elevator. In addition to seating and lounging areas, the sun deck is equipped with a chess field and a putting green. The relaxation areas can be protected from the weather with awnings and umbrellas. In addition, a herb garden was created for the galley on a small area . On the older ships built in 2012, the edge areas of the sun deck are clad with solar panels, the electricity from which is fed into the on-board network. On ships built from 2013 onwards, these solar panels are located on the roof of the two suites at the stern of the ship. In the aft area of ​​the upper deck there is also a display on which the passengers are informed about the current energy generation of the solar panels.

Power supply, drive and control

The concept of the diesel-electric drive and power supply system from E-powered Marine Solutions in Hamburg , which, according to the shipping company, enables fuel savings of up to 20 percent, is unusual for river cruise ships . Two generators each were installed in two structurally separate engine rooms in the stern and in the foredeck , the necessary mechanical energy being generated by a Caterpillar C32 Acert and a C18 Acert. In contrast to other diesel-electric systems, the four generators are not synchronized with each other. Each C32 twelve-cylinder produces a maximum of 994 kW at 1820-1830 rpm and drives an asynchronous machine and the C18 six -cylinder produces a maximum of 383 kW (ships built in 2012) or 492 kW (from year of construction 2013) at 1500 rpm and drive synchronous machines. The generated electrical power of a maximum of 2750 kW is fed into two separable intermediate circuits as direct current at a voltage of approx. 1000 V via a converter . All electrical consumers draw their energy from this, which in turn is converted into three-phase current by converters. In this way, voltage fluctuations in the vehicle electrical system are avoided. Depending on the power requirement, the diesel engines are automatically switched on or off via an energy management system. The front C18 generator was sealed off from the actual engine room and can therefore be used as an emergency power generator . The newer ships built from 2013 onwards have an additional emergency generator with 179 kVA. This allows more flexible operation of all four other generators for generating energy, since one of the generators is no longer reserved as an emergency generator.

It is driven and controlled by four three-bladed Schottel STP 200 double propellers that can be rotated through 360 °, each of which is operated by a 315 kW asynchronous electric motor of the type WH 315 ML 4 from AEM Dessau . This drive concept gives the ship a maximum speed of 20 km / h. Two Schottel SPJ 82 RD with 340 kW each are available as bow thrusters and, if necessary, as emergency drives . Four ships built in 2013 (pp. 539–542) have four Schottel SCD 200s , each of which is driven by a permanently excited electric motor of the type SMPW 250 M16 from the manufacturer Ramme with an output of 360 kW.

Accidents

  • The Viking Bragi rammed a scaffolding at the St. Anna Bridge near Riedenburg on June 18, 2016 at around 02:00 in the morning with 170 travelers and 50 crew members manned on the Altmühl , which has been expanded into the Main-Danube Canal . The ship drove through the bridge on the blocked side when traveling uphill. There were no injuries, but property damage of around 800,000 euros. The Viking Bragi had already wrecked a bridge on the Rhine in 2013.
  • On June 19, 2016, the Viking Tor touched a pillar of the bridge on the Regensburg – Ingolstadt railway line on the Danube near Poikam in Bad Abbach and stood across. There was only property damage, the recovery of the 186 passengers and 51 crew members was difficult because of the current conditions there and was carried out with a turntable ladder from the shore.
  • The Viking Skadi ran aground in the early morning hours of August 19, 2016 with 226 passengers on board on the Rhine near Rees / Kalkar and got stuck there.
  • The Viking Freya had an accident on the Main-Danube Canal near Erlangen in the night from 10 to 11 September 2016 at 1:30 a.m. because the wheelhouse was not lowered in time. It rammed first the bridge of the district road ER 2 , which is called Sylvaniastraße there, and then the railway bridge of the industrial railway line, on which the ship came to rest immediately north of the Frauenaurach area at MDK-km 47.6. A skipper and another crew member died in the collision. The recovery of the 181 passengers and 49 crew members took several hours because an emergency bridge had to be built first, over which the mostly elderly passengers from North America could leave the wrecked ship on foot. Around 220 rescue workers were on duty there. Due to the high degree of destruction of the control station, the exact cause of the accident can no longer be determined.
  • On November 1, 2016, the Viking Ingvi collided with the weir footbridge ⊙ of the Obernau lock . The wheelhouse was destroyed in the process.
  • On the evening of May 29, 2019, the Viking Sigyn collided in Budapest near the Margaret Bridge with the small excursion ship Hableány , which overturned and sank within a few seconds. A 33-person South Korean tour group and two Hungarian crew members were on board the sunk ship. Within the first day, seven passengers were recovered alive and another seven passengers were recovered dead.
  • On June 5, 2019, the Viking Idi severely damaged the underwater gate of the Riedenburg lock at the entrance , which subsequently led to the Main-Danube Canal being closed for two weeks and a traffic jam of over 100 inland vessels.
