The Riedenburg lock was built between September 1977 and November 1982 as part of the construction of the Main-Danube Canal federal waterway . It is built as a river lock.

The chamber of the ship's single lock is at canal kilometer 150.83, has a chamber length of 200 m, a usable length of 190 m and a usable width of 12 m. control
The lock has its own command post, but has been remote-controlled from the WSV district headquarters in Dietfurt since 2007 . The Berching , Dietfurt and Kelheim locks are also remotely controlled from there. From 2024, twelve locks will be controlled from the Nuremberg control center , and later all 16 canal locks.
Except in the event of malfunctions such as accidents, maintenance work or ice drift, the lock is operational around the clock all year round and is illuminated at night. The upper and lower water each-ports for which there are commercial vessels , waiting places with station for the recreational boating and boat ramps for small vehicles . Small vehicles are only handled during the day and usually together with large shipping. Muscle-powered watercraft are not channeled; For these, there is a transport trolley with a deposit on the power station side at the slip points for manual relocation.
Breakdowns
- On January 29, 2014, a motor ship loaded with coal rammed the lock at the entrance and caused a leak.
- On June 18, 2016, a cruise ship with the steering position not retracted got stuck near the lock on a bridge construction site. Passengers and crew got away with the horror, the ship stopped and there was a backlog of ships that could not pass the scene of the accident.
- On November 30, 2017, a motor ship loaded with fertilizer caught fire at the lock. Shipping traffic came to a temporary standstill.
- On June 5, 2019, the Viking Idi severely damaged the edge protection of the underwater gate of the lock at the entrance, which subsequently led to the Main-Danube Canal being closed for two weeks and a traffic jam of over 100 inland vessels.
- On June 28, 2019, a previously undetected ship damaged the edge protection of the upper gate, which resulted in a one-week closure of the canal and a traffic jam of 79 inland vessels.
