The Nuremberg lock is a lock on the Main-Danube Canal federal waterway , about two kilometers north of the port of Nuremberg . It was built between June 1968 and November 1971 as part of the construction of the canal and opened on October 30, 1970. It is designed as a savings lock with three savings basins southwest of the lock basin.

The chamber of the single lock is at canal kilometer 69.09. With a length of 200 m, it has a usable length of 190 m and a usable width of 12 m. The upper water has a height of 312.5  m above sea level. NN , that of the lock underwater is at 303.1  m above sea level. NN . The sluice drop height is 9.4 meters.

The volume of the chamber is 23,030 m³, 15,598 m³ of water are required per lock. The lifting and lowering speed of 1 m / min results in a lock time of around 9 minutes.

The lock has its own command post, but has been remote-controlled from the WSV's district control center in Kriegenbrunn since 2007 . The Eibach , Kriegenbrunn and Erlangen locks are also controlled from there. From 2024, twelve locks will be controlled from the Nuremberg control center , and later all 16 canal locks.

Except in the event of malfunctions such as accidents, maintenance work or ice drift, the lock is operational around the clock all year round and is illuminated at night. The upper and lower water each-ports for which there are commercial vessels , waiting places with station for the recreational boating and boat ramps for small vehicles . Small vehicles are only handled during the day and usually together with large shipping. Muscle-powered watercraft are not channeled; A transport trolley with a deposit is available for manual transfer at the slip points.

Breakdowns

  • On December 8, 2007, an empty tanker rammed a motorized goods ship loaded with soybean husks as it entered the lock .
  • On May 29, 2012, shortly after the lock, a ship collided at the railway bridge because the wheelhouse had not retracted. Two people were trapped and one was injured.
  • On December 9, 2013, the cruise ship River Queen had an accident in the lock. The wheelhouse had not retracted when exiting the lock and therefore got stuck on the gate of the lower head. The 140 passengers and crew got away with the horror.
  • On May 7, 2015, an empty push tank convoy also had an accident because the wheelhouse with the bridge was not retracted.
