Eckersmühlen lock

The list of Main-Danube locks names all locks on the Main-Danube Canal , which connects the Main with the Danube . The canal has a total length of 171 kilometers from the Main near Bamberg to the Danube near Kelheim with 13 canal steps and 3 barrages (the congestion-regulated Regnitz and Altmühl). It is classified as a European waterway Vb and is navigable with large motor cargo ships and push convoys up to a length of 185 and a width of 11.45 meters. In the case of lock systems, the year of completion, the location on the canal, the length of the hold, the dimensions of the lock chamber and the number of ships locked annually are given.

From Bamberg to the apex position between the Hilpoltstein and Bachhausen locks, eleven locks cover a height difference of 175 meters. From Kelheim to the apex position, five locks overcome a height difference of 68 meters. The 16.47 kilometer long apex position is the highest point on the European waterway network at 406 meters above sea level. The canal / reservoirs are 3.73 to 20.43 kilometers long, the height difference to be overcome is 5.29 to 24.67 meters. The lock chambers have a usable length of 190 meters and a width of 12 meters. The locks on the 13 canal steps are so-called economy locks , a special design in which the water consumption per lock can be minimized.
