List of main barrages
The List of Main barrages calls all barrages on Main , a right tributary of the Rhine , in the area of federal waterway . The Main has a total length of 384 kilometers and 34 barrages from the confluence with the Rhine upstream to the confluence of the Regnitz near Bamberg , the beginning of the Main-Danube Canal . From the confluence with the Rhine to the lock Lengfurt it is classified as a European waterway Vb , above the lock Lengfurt as Va . The Main is navigable with large motor cargo ships and with push convoys up to a length of 185 and a width of 11.45 meters. From Bamberg to the Rhine at medium water level, the river overcomes a height difference of 149 meters with the barrages. For each barrage, the year of completion, the location on the Main, the length of the section, the normal water level, the height of fall and the dimensions of the lock chamber are given. The reservoirs of the steps are 5.11 to 18.79 kilometers long, the height difference to be overcome is between 2.36 and 7.59 meters. The lock chambers have an average usable length of 300 and a width of 12 meters. Six barrages below Aschaffenburg have a second lock. With the exception of two, the barrages are connected to hydropower plants with a total output of 127.55 megawatts , and the standard energy capacity of the entire chain is 851 GWh.
Main expansion
The Main bank states Prussia , the Kingdom of Bavaria , the Grand Duchy of Hesse and the Grand Duchy of Baden / Baden (Land) concluded an agreement in 1883 on the expansion of the barrage between the mouth of the Main and Frankfurt am Main . By 1886 the five barrages Kostheim , Flörsheim, Okriftel, Höchst and Niederrad were built with needle weirs .
The congestion regulation was continued in 1901 to Offenbach and between 1913 and 1920 to Aschaffenburg . From 1921 onwards, the Rhein-Main-Donau AG, founded for this purpose, continued to intensify the regulation of the Main's damming. Klingenberg was reached by 1927 .
From 1929 to 1934, the second barrage was expanded on the line from Kostheim to Frankfurt. The number of locks could be reduced to three ( Kostheim , Eddersheim and Griesheim ). All three weirs were built in the New Objectivity style . The Kostheim lock is the westernmost and last facility on the Main. It is considered to be one of the busiest inland locks in Germany.
The barrage expansion reached Würzburg in 1941 during the Second World War . After the war, Ochsenfurt was reached in 1954 and Kitzingen in 1957. The last section from Schweinfurt to Bamberg was completed in 1962. Nuremberg was finally accessible via the Main-Danube Canal . On September 25, 1962, the Main was opened to traffic as a major shipping route. A second expansion phase also took place in the Offenbach-Aschaffenburg section from 1965 to 1983. The Kesselstadt (now Mühlheim), Großkrotzenburg and Kleinostheim levels were replaced by modern buildings and the Mainkur, Großwelzheim and Stockstadt levels were canceled.
The more than 80 year old barrage in Obernau must be replaced. According to current planning (beginning of 2019), construction work is scheduled to begin in 2020; the first construction phase could then be completed in 2030.
