Frickenhausen am Main (officially: Frickenhausen a.Main ) is a market in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg and a member of the Eibelstadt administrative community . It is one of the oldest medieval wine towns in Mainfranken , whose historical appearance has largely been preserved. Numerous half-timbered and baroque buildings were built under the rule of the cathedral chapter in Würzburg . The wineries have been known since Salian times.

geography

The community is located in the administrative district of Lower Franconia, in the Main Franconia region, in the district of Würzburg at the southern tip of the Main Triangle.

Frickenhausen is divided into two districts:

Neighboring communities are Ochsenfurt and Segnitz.

history

Babenberger

Until the 9th century, the settlement belonged to the domain of the Babenbergs . The local viticulture and the establishment of its own church can be traced back to this noble family. Frickenhausen then came to the Würzburg bishopric by way of a donation after the Babenberg count's property had fallen to the Reich as a result of the Babenberg feud . This donation is documented in a document from King Ludwig the Child from the year 903. The king gave the diocese of Würzburg the church and the royal estate in Frickenhausen. This was to compensate for the devastation caused by Adalbert von Babenberg .

Würzburg Monastery

The Würzburg bishops raised Frickenhausen to episcopal table good . They promoted local trade and agriculture, especially viticulture . On May 12, 1182, Pope Lucius III confirmed . the bishopric the "villa, que dicitur Frickenhusen." Bishop Berthold II. von Sternberg incorporated the episcopal patronage parish "Frickenhusen" with its chapels into the bishopric in 1276 with the consent of the cathedral chapter to improve the benefices . In the 14th century, the bishopric accumulated more and more debts, which at the beginning of the 15th century prompted the then Bishop Johann I von Egloffstein to reduce the debts of the bishopric through sales.

Würzburg Cathedral Chapter

So Frickenhausen came through a sale in 1406 for 10,000 guilders to the Würzburg cathedral chapter , which further promoted the place. It cannot be proven with certainty when the place received market rights . If no date of the granting of market rights has been handed down, this indicates that the market is very old. However, since King Ruprecht of the Palatinate (1400–1410) received a written request from the cathedral chapter on November 14, 1406 to extend the fair on St. Gallus Day (October 16) by three days, regular markets must have taken place earlier. In 1642 a cattle market was connected to the fair. All visitors who took part in the Frickenhausen Market were assured of the Holy Roman Empire's umbrella and escort.

In 1475 the cathedral chapter built a large winery. In the second half of the 15th century, a massive fortification with walls and towers was built. The late medieval wall ring surrounds the place in an approximately rectangular outline and has been preserved in its entire circumference. The parish church of St. Gallus, a three-aisled hall church, and the adjoining town hall were built in the late Gothic style in the 16th century.

In particular, viticulture thrived on the limestone soils on the slopes of the Main. Numerous noble families and clerical landlords acquired wine cellars in Frickenhausen. Magnificent half-timbered houses were built. Some representative patrician houses were built during the Baroque period .

Between 1500 and 1806 Frickenhausen was in the Franconian Empire .

Bavaria

As part of the secularization regulated by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , the Hochstift Würzburg was dissolved in 1803 . Frickenhausen fell to the Electorate of Bavaria .
