history
Until the church is planted
Gelchsheim is verifiably more than 800 years old, according to place name research it is certainly much older. The name of the settlement is attested in 1136 as Goulichsheim . The original layout of the castle goes back to the time of the earlier Counts of Hohenlohe . It was partly owned by the Teutonic Order since 1219 . In the course of time, the order gained parish rule and established an official residence there. Gelchsheim belonged to the Deutschordensballei Franconia , which in turn was part of the Franconian Empire from 1500 . The place was fortified until the first half of the 19th century and, along with Aub, was an important customs and escort point on the trade route from Nuremberg to Frankfurt am Main. Gelchsheim was closely connected to the Teutonic Order - especially at the time when the high and German master's residence was in Mergentheim .
Bavaria placed the Gelchsheim office under compulsory administration in 1805/06, and in 1809 the German Order was dissolved. In 1810 Gelchsheim fell to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg of Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany during border adjustments , with whom it finally fell back to Bavaria in 1814. In 1818 the political municipality was established.
