history
Until the church is planted
The community area was already a settlement site during the Stone Age, as recent excavations have shown. Estenfeld was first mentioned in 844 as Espinaveld (later "Espenvelt"). As part of the Hochstift Würzburg ( Mediat Kartause Würzburg ), which belonged to the Franconian Empire , Estenfeld was secularized in 1803 in favor of Bavaria, then handed over to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in the Peace of Pressburg (1805) to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg , with which it finally passed in 1814 Bavaria fell behind. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
Religions
In Estenfeld there is a Catholic and a Protestant parish. The local patron is Saint Mauritius , after whom the two Catholic churches in the town are named, which shape the townscape. The church of St. Markus was built for the Protestant community from 1964. Until the time of National Socialism, there was also Jewish life in Estenfeld, a memorial stele on the square of the former synagogue commemorates the Jewish citizens. As part of the Stolpersteine project , memorial stones were set on the sidewalk in front of former homes of deported Jews.
