Holzkirchen , also known colloquially as Holzkirchen near Würzburg , is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg . The place of the same name is both the capital and the seat of the municipal administration.

The community is located in the Würzburg region , about 19 kilometers west of Würzburg . The Franconian Marienweg runs through wooden churches .

etymology
The name Holzkirchen consists of the Old High German words wood (wood, forest) and kirihha (church). The church was named after its location in the forest.

history
Until the church is planted
The Holzkirchen Monastery, founded before 775, and the place were part of the area of the Würzburg Monastery and fell to the Counts of Löwenstein-Wertheim in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss . In return for a pension, however, they sold it to Bavaria in 1803, which they left with Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1805 to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg . With the treaties of Paris in 1814, the Grand Duchy became part of Bavaria . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Wüstenzell was incorporated.

In the local elections on March 15, 2020, Daniel Bachmann (FWG) was elected with 88.99% of the vote. His predecessor was Klaus Beck (Free Voting Association) from May 1, 1996 to April 30, 2020, who was no longer a candidate.
Alliance Waldsassengau
Since November 20, 2014, Holzkirchen has been organized together with twelve other parishes in the Alliance Waldsassengau . The association serves the intercommunal cooperation.
