Adalbert von Babenberg (* 854 ; † September 9, 906 in Obertheres near Haßfurt ) was one of the most important representatives in the struggle between the Conradins and the Babenbergs for supremacy in the tribal duchy of Franconia (→ Babenberg feud ). He belonged to the family of the older Babenbergs - the name after the toponym is only documented in the 11th century - the family is also referred to as Popponen after the lead name .

In 906, Count Adalbert attacked the Konradines near Fritzlar . In the battle he killed Konrad the Elder . He did not comply with a request from King Ludwig to appear on a court day in Tribur . Instead, he retired to Theres Castle (today Obertheres ), where he was soon besieged by the royal army . As the king's envoy, the Archbishop of Mainz and Chancellor Hatto I promised him safe conduct. When Adalbert left Theres Castle , however, he was captured, sentenced for breach of the peace and beheaded . After that, the Babenbergers lost all offices and possessions in Franconia.
