Princess Ernestine Friederike Sophie von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (born February 22, 1760 in Hildburghausen , † October 28, 1776 in Coburg ) was Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld .

Life

Ernestine Friederike Sophie was the daughter of Duke Ernst Friedrich III. von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (1727–1780) and Ernestine Auguste Sophie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1740–1786). The princess's godparents were the Danish royal couple, the king of Poland, and the regents of the houses of Saxe-Coburg, Saxe-Weimar, Mecklenburg and Württemberg.

On March 6, 1776, at the age of 16, she married the Hereditary Prince and later Duke Franz von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld (1750-1806) in Hildburghausen , who was already in love with his future wife Auguste Reuss zu Ebersdorf (1757-1831) at that time , but could not break the engagement with Sophie. Six months later, on October 28, Sophie died childless of influenza . She was buried in the crypt of the Moritzkirche in Coburg .
