Konrad the Elder (Konradiner)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad the Elder († February 27, 906 near Fritzlar ) from the house of the Konradines was a son of Count Udo in Lahngau (around 830-879) and the father of the future German King Konrad I. Konrad is known as nepos (nephew, grandson, Descendant) of King Arnulf , who was married to Oda, a relative of Conrad.

Life

Konrad was count in Oberlahngau in 886 , count in Wormsgau , from 897 count in Hessengau , 903 count in Gotzfeldgau and 905 count in Wetterau . After Arnulf had overthrown the Franconian margrave Poppo of Thuringia from Babenberg , Konrad was entrusted in 892 as a relative of the queen to succeed Poppo. At the same time, Konrad's brother Rudolf was appointed Bishop of Würzburg , with which the Konradines gained a dominant influence not only in Hesse , but now also in Thuringia and Main Franconia .

When Arnulf died at the end of 899 and shortly afterwards his seven-year-old son Ludwig the child , the son of Odas, was elected king, Konrad and his family gained considerable influence on imperial politics. However, Konrad was unable to assert himself in Thuringia against the Liudolfingers , who were becoming more powerful , and this margraviate was therefore lost again before 903. In return, the family gained further power with the title of a dux regni Lorraine for Konrad's brother Gebhard . From 902 Konrad was in a bloody feud with the Babenbergers , in which he found death near Fritzlar in 906. This very quickly brought about the imprisonment and execution of the last Babenberger, Adalbert . Konrad was buried in the Martinskirche in Weilburg .

The death of Konrad the Elder and the end of the Babenbergs cleared the way for Konrad's son, Konrad the Younger , who then ruled with the title dux (Duke) in Main and Rhine Franconia and was elected King of the East Franconian Empire in 911 .
