Franz Berg (theologian)

Franz Berg (born January 31, 1753 in Frickenhausen am Main , † May 6, 1821 in Würzburg ) was a German Catholic theologian , philosopher, historian and university professor.

Life

From 1768 he studied in Würzburg , where he attended the clerical seminar . After being ordained priest in 1777, he worked as a cathedral chaplain in Würzburg for a few years. In 1785 he became associate professor for patrology, in 1790 full professor for church history and (after retirement) in 1811 professor for universal history at the University of Würzburg .

Berg was one of the supporters of the radical Enlightenment. He criticized Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and his philosophy of identity and Immanuel Kant , whose theory of categories he particularly rejected.
