The large motor goods ship (also: Großmotorschiff , GMS) describes a specification for a type of inland waterway that can operate on those European shipping routes that correspond to at least Class V of inland waterways .

In addition to pure ship data such as length 110 m, depth 2.80 m, width of 11.40 m, capacity about 2100 t describes this standard , the load in the water as speed, wave, backflows etc. This can be for the respective channel administrations the derive structural requirements for a sewer and its structures .

The large motor goods ship, together with a standardized push convoy, is the main type of ship for the expansion and maintenance of the larger German canals (such as the Mittelland Canal , Rhine-Herne Canal , Rhine-Main-Danube Canal , Wesel-Datteln Canal ) .

Comparison with other size standards

  • The next smaller standardized ship size is the European ship .
  • The large motor ship is similar in its dimensions to the large Rhine ship , but its draft is limited to 2.80 m; Large Rhine ships also meet the GMS standard if the draft is adhered to.
  • The term oversized motor ship (ÜGMS, length up to 140 m, width up to 15 m) is used for even larger ships .
