The Dietfurt lock was built between June 1979 and October 1984 as part of the construction of the Main-Danube Canal federal waterway . It is designed as a savings lock with three savings basins southwest of the lock basin.

The chamber of the ship's single lock is at canal kilometer 135.26, has a chamber length of 200 m, a usable length of 190 m and a usable width of 12 m. The upper water has a height of 372  m above sea level. NN , the underwater lock is at 355  m above sea level. NN . The sluice drop height is 17 meters.

Contrary to the gradient, is known as a stage of the pumping chain Donau-Main-transfer water from the Danube, typically at night, in the Dürrlohspeicher passed.

Shortly after the lock, the Altmühl , which flows through the Dietfurt hydropower plant , meets the Main-Danube Canal . This makes the Altmühl part of the canal.

control

The lock has a command post that has been used by the WSV since 2007 as a control center for the remote control of the four southernmost locks of the Main-Danube Canal. The Berching , Riedenburg and Kelheim locks are also remotely controlled from there. From 2024, twelve locks will be controlled from the Nuremberg control center , and later all 16 canal locks.

Except in the event of malfunctions such as accidents, maintenance work or ice drift, the lock is operational around the clock all year round and is illuminated at night. The upper and lower water each-ports for which there are commercial vessels , waiting places with station for the recreational boating and boat ramps for small vehicles . Small vehicles are only handled during the day and usually together with large shipping. Muscle-powered watercraft are not channeled; A transport trolley with a deposit is available for manual transfer at the slip points.

Breakdowns

  • On March 18, 2015, a motor ship rammed into the lock chamber one that was already inside. Both ships were damaged.
  • On August 26, 2016, a cruise ship pulled in with the steering position not retracted and thus got stuck at the lock gate. Passengers and crew got away with the horror and the ship remained ready to sail.
