history

Hilpoltstein Castle

Until the 18th century

The beginnings of Hilpoltstein Castle and the town go back to the 10th century, in the 13th and 14th centuries the castle was the seat of the Lords of Stein. In 1354 Hilpoltstein was granted city rights. Two years later, Schweiger von Gundelfingen sold the castle and town of Hilpoltstein to the Wittelsbach dukes Stephan , Johann and Friedrich . When the duchy was divided, Hilpoltstein became part of Bavaria-Ingolstadt . In 1392 Duke Stephan confirmed the town charter.

Duke Ludwig the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut built a church and the "Traidkasten" at the castle in Hilpoltstein in 1473, which is now used as the guest house. After the Landshut War of Succession in 1505, Hilpoltstein was added to the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg . In 1542 Hilpoltstein, together with Heideck and Allersberg, was pledged to the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg for 36 years . Duke Philipp Ludwig released the offices of Hilpoltstein, Heideck and Allersberg again and bequeathed them together with Sulzbach to his brother, Count Palatine Ottheinrich II. He gave the castle and rule of Hilpoltstein to his wife Dorothea Maria as a widow's seat. After his death and the renovation of the castle, the widowed "illustrious Countess Palatine" arrived in Hilpoltstein in 1606, this is the occasion for the annual castle festival today. In 1615, Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg installed his brother Johann Friedrich in the Hilpoltstein deputate.

After the death of Dorothea Maria in 1639 the castle fell into disrepair, after the death of Johann Friedrich Hilpoltstein lost its function as a royal seat . In 1799 Hilpoltstein was added to the Electorate of Bavaria .

19th to 21st century

In 1862 the Upper Palatinate District Office Hilpoltstein was established. In 1880 the border between Middle Franconia and the Upper Palatinate was straightened. Hilpoltstein was spun off from Upper Palatinate and merged with Greding, which was spun off from the Beilngries district office, to form the new Hilpoltstein district office in Middle Franconia . The Hilpoltstein district, which emerged from this district office, existed from 1939 to 1972. With the municipal reform in 1972, Hilpoltstein became a large community. 47 villages and hamlets were incorporated .

Hilpoltstein developed into a sub-center , but fulfills many functions of a medium-sized center . On September 2, 2006, a type ES 64 U4 locomotive with 357 km / h set a new world speed record for conventional electric locomotives in the area of the city of Hilpoltstein near the Hilpoltstein motorway service station on the new Nuremberg – Ingolstadt line .
