history
Place name
The place name was first mentioned between 1057 and 1075 as Abinberch , another mention was made in 1099 as Auenberg . The first spelling in the current name Abenberg was made in a document from 1152.
The Old High German basic word mountain stands for a larger hill, a raised ground or an overgrown height, in later times also for a castle . The defining word is the personal name Abo . The meaning of the place name is then: "Settlement to the mountain or castle of a Abo".
history
The county of Abenberg arose under the Ottonians between 1002 and 1024. The place was founded around 1040 by Wolfram von Abenberg . Within the next 150 years came from the Abenberg bailiffs of Bamberg, the Würzburg bishop Reginhard , an abbess of Kitzingen and other high dignitaries. Stilla von Abenberg († around 1140) was beatified in 1927. At the turn of the 13th century, the male line of the Abenberger died out. By marriage around 1236 Abenberg came to the burgraves of Nuremberg and thus to the Hohenzollern . At the beginning of 1200 the Abenberg Abbey existed for a relatively short time . The Abenberg oppidum was created around 1260 . The Eichstätt Bishop Reinboto acquired the castle and the place in 1296 and expanded Abenberg further. Abenberg received town charter in 1299, and in 1356 it became a maintenance office. The city was the official seat of the Hochstift Eichstätt and was part of the Franconian Empire from 1500 .
During the witch hunt in the Hochstift Eichstätt at least eleven women from Abenberg were executed as alleged witches.
At the end of the 18th century there were 170 properties in Abenberg. The High Court and the city rulership exercised the Eichstättischen maintenance office Abenberg . The individual properties were subordinate to different landlords : 166 properties belonging to the Abenberg box office , 2 properties belonging to the Principality of Ansbach ( Windsbach box office : 1; Schwabach box office : 1), 1 property belonging to the Nuremberg owner von Haller and 1 property belonging to a Mr. Otter from Schwabach. In addition to the households, there were stately buildings (castle, box office building, forester's house, fall master's office, tithing hall), communal buildings (town hall, school house, two shepherds' houses, bakery, brewery, two poor houses, five gate tower houses, shooting house, water spray house) and church buildings (parish church, Rectory).
The Abenberg Nursing Office was secularized in favor of Bavaria in 1803 and in the same year fell to the Principality of Ansbach (main state comparison Bavaria / Prussia), with which it finally came to the Kingdom of Bavaria by exchange in 1806 (Treaty of Paris, February) . As part of the municipal edict, the Abenberg tax district was formed in 1808 , to which Marienburg belonged. In 1811 the municipality of Abenberg was formed, which was congruent with the tax district. In administration and jurisdiction, it was subordinate to the Pleinfeld Regional Court ( renamed the Roth Regional Court in 1858 ) and the financial management of the Spalt Rent Office ( renamed the Spalt Tax Office in 1920 ). With the second community edict (1818) Abenberg received the status of town II class. From 1862 Abenberg was administered by the Schwabach district office (renamed the Schwabach district in 1938 ). The jurisdiction remained until 1879 the District Court Roth, 1880 at the District Court Roth . In 1932 the Spalt tax office was dissolved. Since then, Abenberg has been subordinate to the Schwabach tax office in the financial administration . The municipality had an area of 8,420 km².
The Burg Abenberg was bequeathed to the city of Frankfurt from its last owner in 1959, but did not accept this gift. Between 1982 and 1984 the city of Abenberg acquired the castle and renovated it from the ground up. Today there is the house of Franconian history , the Abenberg lace museum and a hotel with a restaurant. The castle is used for exhibitions as well as for public and private events.
Incorporations
On July 1, 1971, part of the dissolved municipality of Obersteinbach ob Gmünd was incorporated. On January 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Ebersbach was added. Parts of the Aurau area followed on July 1, 1972. The incorporation of Beerbach, Dürrenmungenau and Wassermungenau completed the series of incorporations on May 1, 1978.
