The old town of Abenberg is an ensemble of buildings in Abenberg , a town in the Central Franconian district of Roth ( Bavaria ).

history

The urban settlement was built at the foot of the 11th century castle of the Count von Abenberg family, which died out in 1230, at the intersection of old streets. After the castle and the town came to the Eichstätt Monastery in 1296 , the settlement was fortified under Bishop Konrad II (1297–1305) and connected to the castle wall. The Upper Gate and Lower Gate , which close off Marktstrasse and Stillaplatz to the west and east, still illustrate the city fortifications , which only exist in ruins. The street between the gates is the axis of the city, which expands in the western part to the triangular Stillaplatz, the northern tip of which leads to the castle entrance and the southern side of which opens to the parish church of St. Jakobus and the former cemetery.

description

Marktstrasse is characterized by exclusively two-storey bourgeois buildings. The older houses are mostly gable-facing plastered buildings, under the plaster there is often half-timbered . The more recent buildings, built since the middle of the 19th century, are mostly sandstone cuboid houses on the eaves . The street scene is also determined by the tiled gable roofs . The nursing home and box house of the Eichstatt rule, which ended in 1796, is located on Stillaplatz . The baroque building by Gabriel de Gabrieli became the town hall. In addition, the rectory and the parish church of St. Jakob stand out from the rest of the buildings. This dominates Stillaplatz in the south. The small house development from the 17th to 19th centuries delimits the former cemetery area on the west side with one and two-storey saddle roof buildings that touch the remains of the western city wall on the rear . To the north, located on the hillside of the castle hill, the castle path connects with its loosely graded up to small houses.
