Buchenbach is a municipality in the southern Black Forest in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald ( Baden-Württemberg , Germany ). It consists of the districts of Buchenbach, Falkensteig, Unteribental and Wagensteig . On December 1, 1971 Buchenbach and Falkensteig had initially merged to form the new municipality of Buchenbach, into which Wagensteig was incorporated on August 1, 1973 and Unteribental on January 1, 1975. In addition, when Burg zu Kirchzarten was incorporated in 1974, the east of the Höllentalbahn railway line of the hamlet of Himmelreich, which had previously belonged to Burg, was incorporated into Buchenbach.

location
The community is located in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park about twelve kilometers (as the crow flies ) east of Freiburg im Breisgau . There it spreads at the lower end of the Höllental through which the Rotbach flows, in the valley of the Wagensteigbach and in the Unteribental up to the St. Märgener plateau and with the Lindenberg up to the height of St. Peter . A little west of Buchenbach, the two mountain streams unite to form the Dreisam , so that Buchenbach lies at the upper beginning of the Dreisam valley .
The community area is between 420 m at the end of the Unteribental and 1156 m at the Roteck.
Community structure
Buchenbach, with the municipalities of Falkensteig, Unteribental and Wagensteig, which were independent until the 1970s, includes 64 villages, hamlets, Zinken, farms and houses.
The Buchenbach community in the 1970s includes the villages of Buchenbach, Oberdorf and Unterdorf, the hamlet of Wiesneck colony, Zinken Blechschmiede, Diezendobel, Falkensteig (partly also part of the Falkensteig community), Himmelreich and Pfaffendobel, the Meierhäuslehof farmstead and the Wiesneck residential area.
The former municipality of Falkensteig includes the Falkensteig farmstead (partly also part of the Buchenbach municipality), the Engenbach and Shoulderdobel farms, several individual farms and the Höfener Hütte and Webersberg residential areas.
The village of Unteribental and the Zinken Lindenberg and Weberdobel belong to the former municipality of Unteribental. The Zinken Spirzendobel as well as numerous individual farms and houses and residential areas belong to the former municipality of Wagensteig.
In the Falkensteig part of the municipality are the abandoned villages of Bubenstein / Neu-Falkenstein and the abandoned former pilgrimage chapel Schwarzeck.

history
Buchenbach with Wiesneck
Buchenbach, located in the lower Wagensteig valley, is made up of several hamlet-like settlement areas and a number of individual farms, including the districts of Ober- and Unterbuchenbach and Wiesneck, which was independent until 1837.
Wiesneck is the oldest part of Buchenbach. The Wiesneck Castle located there was first mentioned in a document in 1079 and belonged to the Counts of Haigerloch- Wiesneck. A small town developed around the castle, which was destroyed in 1121 by the competing Zähringers and in 1646 by the French in the Thirty Years' War , which was incorporated into Buchenbach in 1837. After the town fell to Baden under constitutional law , Wilhelm Freiherr von Sickingen also sold the private rights to the town to the Baden state. The settlement is no longer run as an independent district, but belongs to the main town of Buchenbach.
The village of Buchenbach itself, which was first mentioned in 1350, was also an Austrian fiefdom in the hands of various families, with the barons of Sickingen holding the largest share of the manor since 1653 . After belonging to Baden in 1803, Baron Wilhelm von Sickingen sold the Wiesneck fiefdom to the Baden state, in Buchenbach there was still a manorial office . The division of the various farms in Ober- and Unterbuchenbach to different landlords brought with it all sorts of difficulties and disputes, which in the 19th century, after the dissolution of Wiesneck, led to the reorganization of the municipality several times. Today the community with its incorporated districts belongs to the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

Districts
Falkensteig
Early 12th century built the Lords of Falkenstein the eponymous Castle Falkenstein , which in 1388 by citizens of the city of Freiburg was destroyed. In the 17th century the area became the property of the Lords of Pfirt and later became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden . An attempt to unite with Buchenbach failed in the 19th century.
In the 19th century, the Fauler brothers ran an ironworks , formerly known as the “Obere Blechschmiede”, which consisted of a rolling mill and a hammer mill , to which an iron foundry was later added. At times up to 400 workers were employed here. In 1872 the business was closed due to lack of profitability and most of the buildings were later demolished.

Unteribental
Unteribental is founded around 1120 and is subordinate to the Zähringers . Later it is united with Stegen to form a community. In 1827, however, the place becomes independent again. After Unteribental fell to Baden in 1806 , it was assigned to the Freiburg district. The component "ib" in the name indicates earlier yew stands .
Wagon platform
Wagensteig is first mentioned in a document in 1125. After secularization through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss it comes to Baden and there in 1819 to the Freiburg district.

On February 2, 2020, the mayoral election in Buchenbach took place. In addition to the incumbent Harald Reinhard, three other candidates stood. Ralf Kaiser won the election with 75.2% of the valid votes in the first ballot, whereas the incumbent only got 14.3% of the votes and the other two applicants together achieved a good ten percent. The turnout was 74.0%.
Administrative community
Buchenbach and the neighboring municipalities of Kirchzarten, Oberried and Stegen belong to the Dreisamtal municipal administration association based in Kirchzarten.

Churches
The Catholic parish church of St. Blasius , originally baroque, was renovated in the neo-Gothic style from 1899 to 1901 . In 1967/68 the publisher Theophil Herder-Dorneich built the Our Father Chapel in Ibental . There is a St. Nicholas' Chapel each in Falkensteig and Wagensteig.
Museums
The Hansmeyerhof , built in 1620, is one of the oldest Black Forest farms in the valley and is now a museum for rural culture in the southern Black Forest.

On the western outskirts of the municipality in Kirchzarten, the Himmelreich train station is located on the Höllentalbahn , which runs every half hour during the day and offers a convenient connection to Freiburg im Breisgau and the Upper Black Forest (alternating from Titisee to Neustadt in the Black Forest or as a three-way train to Seebrugg am Schluchsee ) .
In the west of Buchenbach and through the district Falkensteig runs the federal road 31 ( Breisach - Lindau ), the most important connection to Freiburg im Breisgau and into the Black Forest and Lake Constance . The state road L 128 branches off immediately on the outskirts and leads through the Wagensteig valley via St. Märgen to the Thurner . Between the districts of Buchenbach and Wagensteig, a direct road connection to Thurner branches off with the 4907 district road through Spirzental.

education
There is a primary school in Buchenbach called the Sommerbergschule . In the 2015/16 school year it was attended by 105 pupils who were taught in seven classes (three classes 1/2, classes 3 and 4 each in two classes). A branch of the Werkrealschule Dreisamtal is also housed in the school building. Schoolchildren in grades 5 to 7 from Buchenbach and Oberried are taught here.
Since 1958, the Wiesneck district has been home to the Studienhaus Wiesneck educational and meeting place with the Institute for Civic Education Baden-Württemberg eV (formerly the East-West Institute , founded on the initiative of Arnold Bergstraesser .)
