(176) Iduna is an asteroid of the outer main asteroid belt , which was discovered by Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters in New York on October 14, 1877 . The heavenly body was named after Idun , the goddess of youth from Nordic mythology .
Iduna moves at a distance of 2.7 ( perihelion ) to 3.7 ( aphelion ) astronomical units around the sun in 5.7 years . The orbit is strongly inclined towards the ecliptic at 22.5 ° , the orbit eccentricity is 0.16. Iduna has a diameter of about 120 kilometers. It has a dark carbonaceous surface with an albedo of 0.08. It rotates on its own axis in around 11.3 hours.
