The mill property

The Swiss Mill is a district of the town of Hilpoltstein in the Middle Franconian district of Roth in Bavaria . It is the only still in operation, water wheel-driven grain mill in a wide area .

location

The district is located on the Minbach , a tributary of the Roth , about one kilometer southeast of the Hilpoltstein district of Hofstetten.

history

The mill belonged to the Walderbach monastery with regard to the manorial rule with the Paulusmühle and the 17 properties of Hofstetten . She was parish to Hofstetten, a branch church of Zell. In 1540 a Swiss Barthel ran the mill and probably gave it its name. In 1792 the Angermeier family took over the mill, which was equipped with the right to grind and saw.

In the new Kingdom of Bavaria (1806) a Hilpoltstein tax district was formed, to which the Swiss mill was assigned together with Hofstetten. With the municipal edict of 1818 Hofstetten became an independent political municipality to which the Swiss mill belonged. As part of the regional reform in Bavaria , Hofstetten and with it the Swiss mill was incorporated into Hilpoltstein on January 1, 1972.

present

The mill property is still owned by the Angermeier family. The grinding mill with its roller mills is driven by an overshot water wheel on the Minbach and a second, medium-sized water wheel on the Mühlbach, the gradient is 4.80 meters. If necessary, electric motors are switched on. One ton of grain (rye, wheat, spelled) is ground per day. Some of the flour is marketed directly. Agriculture is also practiced.

Court cross on the earth cellar of the mill

Earth cellar

In the middle of the 19th century, the earth cellar in the mill property was provided with a stepped front wall made of sandstone. It is crowned with two animal figures. The cross to the right of the cellar entrance was erected in 1898.

Architectural monuments

The earth cellar and a sandstone barn from 1607/08 are considered architectural monuments.
