The list of locks in the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal lists all the existing and abandoned locks along the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal .

Structure of the lock list

The order of the locks in the list is based on the mileage from the beginning near Kelheim to the end in Bamberg . The list is based on the BayernAtlas and its historical maps. Originally there were 100 locks along the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal . Between the beginning at Kelheim to the summit level were between 32 and summit level 68 and Bamberg locks. Column 1 is used for consecutive numbering. In column 2, historical images or current photographs are shown, if available. Column 3 gives information on the current situation of the lock property. Column 4 contains the current kilometrage and column 5 the distance between the locks described in each case, also referred to as “hold”. In column 6, if it can be determined, the height of fall is given, i.e. the original mean height difference between the upper and lower water of the canal. In column 7 the height above sea ​​level is given, in 8 there are information on the monument , in number 9 on the coordinates of the lock and numbers 10 and 11 contain links to the locations.

The locks and today's situation

Today (as of November 2016) there are only 68 locks left, some of them in building remains. Some were completely filled in or were permanently disturbed by road construction. Most of the still existing locks have been designated as architectural monuments by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . The locks were mostly about 34 meters long, 5 meters wide and had a drop height of about two meters. Some locks had an intermediate gate with which the chamber could be shortened to about 26 meters to save water. Filling or emptying the chamber, which can hold up to 500,000 liters, took between 10 and 15 minutes. The gates had to be opened and closed with bars. Today only locks 1, 12, 24, 25, 26, 30, 32, 33, 58, 68 and 100 are in working order. Stone steps were originally attached to the lower head. In the area of ​​the Nuremberg Water Management Office , these stairs were filled in as part of accident prevention in the 2000s. These are still freely accessible in the area of ​​the Regensburg Water Management Office. However, the original oak doors are no longer preserved anywhere. The heads have mostly been replaced by walls. On the southern flank there is occasional museum operation with the two still-preserved tow ships Alma Viktoria and Elfriede in the summer months . Locking with the Alma Viktoria is still possible today at lock 25 (Berching, Pollanden district) on some summer weekends. Lock 31 was archaeologically prospered in 2015 and is currently being revitalized.

The lock 94 near Eggolsheim was renovated by a support association and ceremonially opened to the public on July 8, 2017. Together with lock 22 at Beilngries , they are the only accessible locks on the Ludwig Canal.

69 guard houses were built along the canal for the lock keepers. The surrounding land could be used for keeping animals and as a garden for the lock keepers. Two of these lock keeper's houses (number 30 near Mühlhausen and number 35 near Burgthann) are now used as restaurants. The towing and service roads in between were formerly lined with fruit trees, most of which are now gone. However, there have been newly introduced aquatic plants that have to be mowed regularly.
