Canal lock 30 is a part of the municipality of Mühlhausen in the Upper Palatinate district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate .

At the 100 locks of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, which opened in 1843, there were 69 guard houses, most of which were completed by the end of 1840. The keeper who lived there and his assistants were responsible for the operation and maintenance of one lock, sometimes up to three or even six locks. He was also responsible for maintaining the canal and its facilities. The guards' houses were built according to a model plan, which was slightly modified depending on the terrain. The small pieces of land around the keeper's houses were used for horticulture and the keeping of small animals by the keeper's family. The canal was finally closed in 1950, but the keepers' houses were still inhabited for the time being.

In the official register of localities of the Kingdom of Bavaria, which show the results of previous censuses, the keepers do not yet appear separately. The canal locks are only listed as districts from the first directory after the Second World War in 1950, although expressly without an official name, i.e. only numbered consecutively. Until the regional reform in Bavaria , the canal locks 28 to 30 appear as separate parts of the municipality of Wappersdorf . They were incorporated with Wappersdorf and the other Wappersdorfer community part Weihersdorf on January 1, 1974 to Mühlhausen, where they continued to be expelled as community parts. The official locality directory 1987 no longer shows permanent residents for canal lock 30.

The chamber lock , the arched bridge and the former lock keeper's house are designated as architectural monuments by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments (D-3-73-146-75). The lock keeper's house, which had already been renovated, was leased to the Allersberg Forestry Company for several years and had been vacant since the end of 2010. In November 2011 the house was sold to private customers and turned into a daytime cafe (Café zur Ludwigslust). In 2018, the masonry of the chamber lock was renovated and new lock gates were installed, which were made in the winter of 2017/2018 by the carpenters of the Neumarkt river management office.

The canal was drained for the work in the area of the lock chamber. A mobile barrier structure was used here, which consists of a huge hose that is filled with water. The rubber dam was borrowed from the Nuremberg river management office. who had already successfully used the technology on lock 58 renovation.
