location

It is located on Annanaukio Street in the southeast corner of Narinkkatori Square in downtown Helsinki, not far from the entrance to the Kampin keskus shopping center .

Architecture and history

The chapel was built by the architects Mikko Summanen , Niko Sirola and Kimmo Lintula of the Helsinki architectural office K2S Architects and completed in 2012. It was part of the program of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 . The chapel, built from three different types of wood, reaches a height of up to 11.5 meters. The outer walls are made of spruce wood and coated with a special wax made using nanotechnology .

Inside the chapel, the walls are made of alder wood and milled into shape. Ash wood was used for the interior and the interior door. Plasterboard was used as a sound-insulating ceiling cladding. On the altar is a cross made by the silversmith Antti Nieminen . The textile artist Tiina Uimonen made the silk paraments .

Even before completion, the chapel received the International Architecture Award of the Chicago Athenaeum in 2010 .

The chapel is jointly run by the Lutheran parish and the Helsinki Social and Health Department. During the opening hours, employees of both institutions are available to assist visitors. Short prayers are held in the chapel. Sunday services do not take place. Occasionally the chapel is used as a venue for concerts.
