Schwarzenbach - Dörlbacher incision

The Elfriede is a restored towboat . The ship operates for tourist purposes on a section of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal in the municipality of Burgthann in the central Franconian district of Nürnberger Land .

technical description

The towing ship Elfriede is around 21 meters long, 4 meters wide and weighs 20 tons. It is essentially made of steel . The hull is riveted, has a flat bottom, a round chin and an open, uncovered hold. The cargo space is now equipped with benches. The ship was equipped with two oars due to the lack of turning ability on the narrow channel . It has no engine and is pulled over the towpaths by a draft horse .

history

The ship, presumably built in the 1930s, was used until around 1970. The Elfriede has been used as a tourist attraction since the 150th anniversary of the opening of the canal in 1995 . In the summer months there is a trip once a month. In the winter months, the ship is in winter storage near the Dörlbach cut .

Before it was restored by the Nuremberg Water Management Authority , the Elfriede was very badly rusted and was originally supposed to be scrapped.

Tourist use

Every Sunday from May to September, trips take place on the apex of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal between the Burgthanner district of Schwarzenbach and the Dörlbacher Einschnitt. The journey starts at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The towboat casts off and on again in Schwarzenbach near the restaurant "Zum Ludwigskanal". The journey time is around 45 minutes. During the voyage, the ship's personnel provide information about the history of the historic canal.

In addition to the Elfriede , another towing ship, the Alma Viktoria , built in 1933, is operated on the old canal near Mühlhausen . Almost all tow ships were scrapped. A few have been converted and are used in Kelheim as a ship landing stage.
