history

Dörlbach was first mentioned in 1339 as Törlbach (settlement on the stream that flows through a small gate). The Dörlbacher estates belonged to the Nuremberg monasteries for a long time. In 1796 the place consisted of seven courtyards, a side house and a shepherd's house.

In 1806 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria and the place became an independent political municipality together with Peunting and Westhaid. On July 1, 1972, Dörlbach was incorporated into Burgthann as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

Culture and sights

Dörlbacher Au war memorial

Dörlbacher Au war memorial

There is a war memorial in a curve on the connecting road between Dörlbach and Westhaid . The monument is about 2 meters high and made of castle sandstone . It is secured with a metal fence. On the monument there is a marble plaque with an inscription:

Erected in memory of the glorious victories of the Germans in France in the years 1870-71 and the peace festival on March 3, 1871 Donated by the communities of Schwarzenbach and Dörlbach

To commemorate peace, four peace linden trees were planted at the monument.

Dörlbacher incision

About one kilometer east of Dörlbach is the Dörlbach cut of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal . This section is under monument protection and is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 574A012.

geology

The cut opens up the upper third of the 70 meters thick Black Jura . The deposits of a shallow epicontinental sea , which are 178 to 200 million years old because of their dark color, were given the name in 1837 by the geologist Leopold von Buch . Amaltheenton can be seen here in the outcrop at the very bottom , a 38-meter-thick dark gray claystone with few fossils. Above it lies the only 2.1 meters thick Posidonia schist with an alternation of lime-rich oil shale and fossil- rich limestone. As part of the renovation work, various fossils were found in this layer, which can be viewed in the Burgthann Canal Museum and in the Altdorf University Museum. The next layer is the 3.2-meter-thick Jurensis marl with lime-rich clays and phosphatic or iron sulphide tubers. Dark gray and low-fossil clay stones of the Opalinus Clay form the end .

In 1834 King Ludwig I gave the order to connect the rivers Main and Danube . The breakthrough took place near Dörlbach in 1840. With a length of 1000 meters, a depth of around 16 meters and an incline of 47 degrees, enormous amounts of earth had to be moved with simple means. Supported by a steam-powered shovel excavator from the Nuremberg factory owner Johann Wilhelm Spaeth , the 17.5 million guilders expensive construction work was completed with a pick and shovel, which corresponds to a current sum of around 8.75 million euros.

In the winter of 2004/2005, the northern slope of the section began to slide. After further landslides in 2006 and 2008, a cycle and footpath was closed for safety reasons. The rocky and tree-covered southern slope is stable to this day. According to a geological report, extensive safety measures were carried out in two construction phases in 2010 and 2012. The renovation costs amounted to 2.85 million euros. Around 80,000 cubic meters of earth were moved and the predominantly clayey material was secured using seepage strands and a retaining wall. In April 2013, the popular bike and hiking trail was reopened.

In 2017 new information boards were set up and the sewer section again drained for construction work.

In the summer months it is possible to sail the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal with the towboat Elfriede like 150 years ago.
