Architectural monuments

Marienkirche Unterferrieden

The origins of the church are in the dark. Papal letters of protection from the years 1179 and 1186 mention an "ecclisa varrieden" for the first time. This could mean the Marienkirche Unterferrieden. The current church was built in the mid-14th century in Romanesque style. To a large extent, it has retained its original appearance, especially because of the wall paintings in the choir room: On the vault, the four evangelist symbols are depicted with banners against a light background with stars. Christ is enthroned at the crown of the head with the globe in his left hand, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing. The figure covers the keystone with a strictly stylized relief of the Lamb of God. On the walls there are scenes from the life of Mary: Birth of Jesus (only Joseph can be seen) - Adoration of the Magi - Mary (and John) under the cross - Mary on the death bed surrounded by the risen One and the apostles. The church is also decorated with a statue of the Virgin Mary, two figures of saints and an expressive crucifix. The restoration measures of the parish were honored in 2007 with the inclusion in the monument award of the district of Middle Franconia. The church is open during the day. On Sunday the frescoes in the choir room are illuminated.

Fallen memorial
Monument to the fallen of Unterferrieden

The monument in front of the church was inaugurated on August 7, 1921. In the newspaper report about it, the original form is described: "On two steps there is a massive square column with the names of the fallen, on top of which lies a steel helmet with a wreath of oak leaves protruding from it, both made of the same stone." The monument was fundamentally redesigned in 1959. The helmet has been removed and the carved names plastered over. Then the column was put upside down (with the newly carved image of Christ) again. The names of those killed in the First and Second World Wars were written in lead letters on the sides . In the Marienkirche there is still an oak panel with 15 porcelain pictures of the fallen of the First World War. A memorial service is held at the memorial every year on Memorial Day.
