Mulhouse - Berching

The Alma Viktoria is a restored towboat . The ship operates for tourist purposes on a section of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal in the municipalities of Berching (Pollanten) and Mühlhausen in the Upper Palatinate district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate .

technical description

The towing ship Alma Viktoria is around 20 meters long, 4 meters wide and weighs around 20 tons. It is essentially made of steel . The hull is riveted, has a flat bottom, a round cheek , an open, uncovered hold that was subsequently built over. The cargo space is now equipped with benches. The ship was equipped with two oars due to the lack of turning ability on the narrow channel. It has no engine and is pulled over the towpaths by a draft horse .

history

The ship was built in 1933. Alma Viktoria has been used as a tourist attraction since the 150th anniversary of the opening of the canal in 1995 .

The owner of the ship is the Regensburg Water Management Authority .

Tourist use

From Easter to September, trips are made on the lock position of lock 24 of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal between Mühlhausen and Berching after registration . The highlight of every towing trip is the only remaining historical lock at lock 25.

In the winter months, the towing ship is brought to lock 24 north of Berching with a low loader .

In addition to the Alma Viktoria , another towing ship, the Elfriede , is operated on the old canal in Burgthann . Almost all tow ships were scrapped. A few have been converted and are used in Kelheim as a ship landing stage.
