history

MDK near Frauenaurach

The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal had passed Erlangen to the west as early as the 1840s . After damage in the Second World War , it was abandoned around 1950, also due to the outdated transport capacities and the lack of landing facilities near Frauenaurach. In the 1960s it was filled in near Erlangen as a route for the federal highway 73 and completely built over; the planning and construction activities for the new sewer construction began. A mighty canal monument in Erlangen still reminds of the historical facilities built 175 years ago. The parcels of Hühnerfleck and Hüttendorferwegfeld about one kilometer to the west were selected as the site. At about the same time, the large Franken power plant was built, which was assigned the Frauenaurach site as a factory site for coal- based electricity generation, so that the huge quantities of coal could be transhipped cost-effectively directly from the ship to the factory facilities. The power plant went into operation in 1967, the new port facility only in the summer of 1970. In 2001 the power plant was closed, in 2002 first the chimney and in 2005 the power plant building was blown up. The land lay fallow in the following years. Since 2011, the Geis Group has been building a logistics center on the vacated site with the option of reactivating the site and its own siding.

On September 11, 2016 at 01:30 am, a serious ship accident occurred on the Frauenaurach landing stage . Since the steering position was not lowered, the passenger ship Viking Freya first rammed the north-facing road bridge of the district road ER 2 and then the railway bridge of the industrial railway line, which opens up the Frauenaurach area and the port of Erlangen . The responsible skipper and another crew member got trapped and could only be recovered dead. After the 181 passengers and 49 crew members had been rescued via a specially built emergency bridge, the ship was moored outside the fairway on the Frauenaurach site.

Commerce and infrastructure

The total area of the Frauenaurach port area is around 50 hectares and is not yet fully used. 1.5 hectares are occupied by the port facilities and their traffic routes, 0.5 hectares are used by the Herzogenaurach sports boat club as club area, which operates a sports boat harbor with 15 berths for small vehicles and 10 berths for small vehicles and its club house directly opposite, at MDK 47.7 West .

Cargo handling, which will be operated by GEIS - Industrie-Service GmbH in the future , is currently not taking place again due to renovation measures . The previously existing 16 t crane system was temporarily dismantled. A pull-out track branches off from the former Erlangen-Bruck-Herzogenaurach railway to the Frauenaurach area and ends there as a stump track. At the moment it does not lead directly to the quay, so that a direct rail / ship transshipment cannot take place again at the moment.

With a quay length of 365 meters, either two push convoys with a length of 185 m or three motorized goods ships of 110 m length can moor at the same time, whereby cargo handling is no longer possible due to the quay which has been built with new buildings. Customs clearance on site would also be possible without any problems. At the Kriegenbrunn lock, 600 meters away, there are berths for two to three other ships at the outer port of the lock , but these can only be used in the event of short waiting times or operational disruptions in the canal. Directly north of the Frauenaurach area there is a separate turn of the ship in which watercraft up to a length of 135 m can turn.

traffic

In the west, the Erlangen state has access to the federal motorway 3 , 4 km away ; the traffic routes there are free of intersections and can be loaded with up to 38 tons.
