Lände Zeil am Main is a port and industrial area in the town of Zeil am Main in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge .
geography
The Lände Zeil am Main is one kilometer south of the city center and is a purely port and industrial area on the Main Federal Waterway . It is located orographically on the right at Mainkilometer 362.5 at the Knetzgau hold at an altitude of 221 m above sea level. NN .
history
The Main was already used as a waterway in Celtic times. There was graining and plowing , rafting , rowing and sailing. Attempts by the Romans to advance across the Maingraben to the east as far as the Elbe were repulsed by the Germanic Cimbri at the turn of the century . The Main continued to be an important trade route. In Carolingian times, there were first attempts to connect the waterway of the Main with the Danube region ( Fossa Carolina ), of which only contradicting records and a few findings on remains at Graben are available.
In the Middle Ages, large quantities of wood were rafted , for example to Frankfurt, the Ruhr area, but also for shipbuilding in Holland.
Until the end of the 17th century, the landfall was on the Altmain near Sand am Main . Between 1808 and 1817 the course of the river was straightened and the land moved about 1.3 km to the north. From 1830 on, steam shipping gradually replaced traditional shipping techniques. The transport volumes increased to up to 50 tons per vessel due to greater unloading depths . When the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal was completed between 1836 and 1846 , transport increased by leaps and bounds. Rail traffic became serious competition for shipping around 1850 when the Bamberg – Rottendorf railway went into operation. From 1912, however, the volume of goods transported could be increased again by expanding chain shipping on the Main to Bamberg , in particular by delivering coal from the Ruhr area.
Around 1932, the port facilities were further modernized and expanded, and for the first time more than 10,000 tons were handled annually.
Damage caused by the destruction in World War II was initially only repaired temporarily and rafting was still in operation until the 1950s. Operations on the Ludwigs-Main-Danube Canal were stopped and the shipping route to southern Bavaria was initially cut off. Reconstruction took place in the late 1970s when a sugar factory was established in Zeil. During the construction phase of the Main-Danube Canal from 1965 to 1992, the volumes handled rose continuously as more and more ports were accessible again towards the south. After the canal was completed, the maximum transport volume was reached in the 2000s; in the meantime it has decreased slightly.
Commerce and infrastructure
Of the total area of almost 100 hectares designated for the Zeil area, 34 hectares have so far been used commercially. The port facilities take up another 2.3 hectares. Mainly stones, forest and agricultural products, animal feed and fertilizers as well as metal waste are handled.
In the meantime, other companies in the transport, storage and logistics industries have settled here. The land was fortified to a quay length of 400 m so that three motorized goods ships 110 m long or two push convoys 185 m long can moor there. A semi-portal crane with a height of 48.5 m, 32 m boom and 10 t lifting force, pumps, etc. enable the handling of heavy, piece and bulk goods . There are also 16 silos with a capacity of 12,000 t as well as 6,000 m² of free storage space, scales up to 60 t total weight that can be driven over for vehicles up to 18 m in length, industrial trucks and supply and disposal facilities. There is a possibility of rail loading in the immediate vicinity on the tracks of the sugar factory that was closed in 2005. A direct development of the quay with a port railway was always considered. The planned route has been kept free, but the connection has not yet been made due to a lack of demand on the last kilometer.
There is also a dock for passenger and passenger cabin ships.
traffic
The district road HAS 16 connects the port area with the federal road 26 located 700 m to the north and this continues to the federal highway 70 .
