history

Main shipping in Ochsenfurt 1656

The Main was already used as a waterway in Celtic times. There was graining and plowing , rafting , rowing and sailing. At the turn of the century, the Germanic Cimbri used the important trade and transport route. In Carolingian times, the necessity to connect the waterway of the Main with the Danube area had long been recognized and with the Karlsgraben a navigable connection was established for the first time. In the 11th century, a ferry service near Ochsenfurt is also mentioned in writing. In the Middle Ages, large quantities of wood were rafted , for example to Frankfurt, the Ruhr area, but also for shipbuilding in Holland. On a painting by Ochsenfurt from 1623, the landing site on the Altmain and the busy shipping operations can be seen.

Around 1830 steam shipping replaced traditional shipping methods. Larger unloading depths enabled transport volumes of up to 50 tons per vessel. When the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal was completed between 1836 and 1846 , transport increased by leaps and bounds and the port was fortified as a protective port from 1868 onwards . Rail traffic was a serious competitor for shipping around 1860 when the Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway went into operation. A port railway was built in 1897 and trimodal handling became possible. In 1898, chain shipping on the Main reached Kitzingen and the quantities of goods carried could be increased again, particularly through coal deliveries from the Ruhr area. In 1907 the Gaubahn also opened up the southern mainland.

In 1971, BayWa AG acquired the heritable building rights to the port property and the gantry crane was built. Between 2001 and 2005 the port basin was upgraded for ships with a draft of up to three meters . The port railway was also privatized and has since been operated by Stadtwerke Ochsenfurt.

In addition to BayWa , there are also a number of companies in the service and trade sector. The port is fortified to a quay length of 300 m and has a further 250 m banked banks. There is a possibility for rail loading directly on the quay . In addition to two gantry cranes with a load capacity of 7.5 t, a scale and pumps, there are also 2000 m² of open-air storage space and covered warehouses and silos for 200 t of bulk goods .
