Souk El Gharb (also Suk, Sug, ul, Souk al) is a city in the Governorate Lebanon Mountains in the district alayh in Lebanon . The name of the village translates as “western market”.

Prior to the Lebanese Civil War , this was an up and coming mountain resort in the Alayh district of Mount Lebanon . There is a pine forest there with a view of the Golfe de Saint-Georges and Beirut . The city is just a few kilometers from the city of Alayh and is now considered one of its suburbs. The towns between Aley and Souk El Gharb are Bmakine and the two Ains Ain el-Sayydé and Ain el-Rimmané . The town of Kaifun is located south of Souk El Gharb .

  • The Greek Catholic Abbey of Saint George of Bmakine.
  • The Greek Orthodox Abbey of Saint George which was founded in 1557 and serves as the summer residence of the Orthodox Metropolitan of Beirut.

Educational institutions

Souk El Gharb is known for some of its schools: the Souk El Gharb Presbyterian School (alumni included Abraham Rihbany , among others ), the Souk El Gharb College of Lebanon, the Souk El Gharb Technical Institute and College, the Souk el Gharb School for English Instruction and the Souk El Gharb Boarding School for Boys. There is also the Balamand University in Souk El Gharb.

history

There are ruins from Roman times in the city. Some buildings were built in the 16th century. The city was the site of important battles during the Civil War, which severely affected the city. In June 2005 parliamentary elections were held for the first time since the withdrawal of the Syrian armed forces.
