The Golfe de Saint-Georges or St. George's Bay ( Arabic خليج السان جورج Khalidsch as-San Jurdsch ) is a bay of the Mediterranean north and east of the Lebanese capital Beirut . The city's promenade, the Corniche Beirut , begins here at the bay, or at the site of the attack on Rafiq al-Hariri . The port of Beirut is on the east side of the city in the bay.
location
The Golfe de Saint-Georges is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean and is part of the Levantine Sea . It begins on the west side about the famous, eponymous Saint George Hotel , which located in the new Marina of Zaitunay Bay is located. The city expansion east of the marina is creating a new Beirut district on this former part of the bay. The port of Beirut with its four harbor bays behind a protective wall connects to this area.
Tributaries
The Nahr Beyrouth river , which has its source regions at the western hands of the mountain range of Lebanon , more precisely Mont Sannine , at an altitude of about 1900 meters, flows into the bay in the port of Beirut. In the urban area, the river runs in a concrete bed. Like most rivers in Lebanon, the Nahr Beyrouth dries up in summer. Heavy rainfall can lead to flooding in the urban area.
Legend
According to legend, St. George killed the dragon here, which had already devoured all the animals in the country and demanded a daily tribute (two people) from the people. George arrived on the day on which the daughter of the king was to suffer this fate. After a fierce fight, George killed the dragon and saved the princess. The bay got its name after this event.
Events
The bay was the venue for the World Sailing Championships in the Fireball class in 1971 . Furthermore, from 1955 until the beginning of the Lebanese civil war , it was the venue for an international water ski championship every year .
