history
The Main was already used as a waterway in Celtic times. There was graining and plowing , rafting , fishing, rowing and sailing. Attempts by the Romans to advance across the Maingraben to the east as far as the Elbe were repulsed by the Germanic Cimbri at the turn of the century . Although the Romans reached Gemünden a. Main, however, they could not consolidate themselves in the area and had to retreat to the west again during the Pannonian uprising , behind the Limes 30 km away . The viticulture they brought with them remained and the vineyards are still a tourist magnet for the area today. The Main continued to be an important trade route. In Carolingian times there were first attempts to connect the waterway of the Main with the Danube area ( Fossa Carolina ), of which only contradicting records and a few findings of remains at Graben are available.
In the Middle Ages, large quantities of wood were rafted , for example to Frankfurt, the Ruhr area, but also for shipbuilding in Holland. At that time, the landfall points were at the mouth of the Franconian Saale ⊙ near the old town, as old engravings show.
In the 1810s, the Bavarian original cadastre recorded the already fortified harbor with two docks on the Main in Gemünden, east of the mouth of the Franconian Saale.
In the 1830s, Gemünden am Main was opened up from the west by steamship and the transport volumes rose to up to 50 tons per vessel. In the years 1836 to 1846 the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal was gradually completed, and the continuous navigability to the Danube region caused the transport volumes to increase rapidly. From 1852 the port was opened up to the pier with a steam train (see pen drawing) so that trimodal transport ship - rail - road was already possible there. In 1897 the Main Chain reached Gemünden and the transport volumes could be increased further through the introduction of chain shipping, especially through steel and coal deliveries from the Ruhr area. In the last months of the Second World War , two thirds of the infrastructure in Gemünden was destroyed and the port's railway facilities were not completely restored in the post-war period . Since then, the port has served as a protective port and external base for the Schweinfurt Waterways and Shipping Office.
Commerce and infrastructure
The transshipment operations in Gemünden am Main have largely come to a standstill. In addition to the systems for recreational shipping with small vehicles , passenger shipping is becoming increasingly important. Especially on river cruises , high five-digit passenger numbers are counted annually in Main Franconia .
traffic
Municipal roads open up all parts of the port to the federal highway 26 running north . There are public transport access options in all parts of the port in reasonable proximity. Scheduled ships run regularly from the Gemünden pier to Würzburg , Bamberg , Aschaffenburg and Frankfurt am Main .
