Graben is a district of the town of Treuchtlingen in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Bavaria .
The village is about three kilometers northeast of Treuchtlingen in the Altmühltal at the foot of the Nagelberg . Other larger localities in the vicinity are the city of Weißenburg in the north and Wettelsheim in the west.
Graben was probably created around 793, on the occasion of an attempt by Charlemagne to connect the river systems of the Rhine and Danube by a canal, the Fossa Carolina (Karlsgraben), from which the place name comes. Earth walls, excavations and a water surface still bear witness to the construction project today.
The Protestant village church with St. Kunigunde as patron saint contains, among other things, well-preserved late Gothic frescoes .
On April 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Graben was incorporated into the city of Treuchtlingen.
In 1997 Graben successfully took part in the competition Our village has a future . The Fossa Carolina , located right next to the village, is one of the greatest technical cultural monuments of the early Middle Ages. An exhibition with multimedia presentation reconstructs the Karlsgraben building from over 1200 years ago.
There are full-time and part-time agricultural businesses in the village, and the local commuters work mainly in Treuchtlingen and Weißenburg.
The Treuchtlingen – Nuremberg railway line runs to the east , and communal roads lead to Grönhart , Bubenheim , Dettenheim (to Bundesstraße 2 ) and Treuchtlingen.
