Wettelsheim is the largest district of the city of Treuchtlingen in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Bavaria . It lies on the edge of the Hahnenkamm in the southern Franconian Alb . The place is even the largest district of all communities in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and has more residents than the ten smallest communities in the district and their districts.

location

Wettelsheim is located in the Altmühltal Nature Park between Bubenheim and Windischhausen , around four kilometers south of Markt Berolzheim and around two and a half kilometers north of Treuchtlingen. It is surrounded by extensive mixed forests and the Altmühlwiesen . To the south are the twin mountains Patrich (599.6 m) and Viersteinberg (600.2 m), to the north-west is the Berolzheim Forest . The Rohrach , a tributary of the Altmühl, whose stone bridges give the site a special character, and the Erlach , which comes from Falbenthal on the southern edge of the village, run through the village and flows into the Rohrach. Southwest of Wettelsheim in the Rohrachtal is the 4.45 hectare area of Rohrachmäander near Wettelsheim, which is designated as a “Protected Landscape Component ” .

traffic

The disused Wettelsheim train station

The main streets of the village are the district road WUG 5 and the state road St 2230 . The Altmühltal Panorama Trail also runs through the village . The Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway runs past Wettelsheim . The village had its own train station, opened in 1869 and now closed, with two main tracks. Treuchtlingen train station is approx. 4 km away. A bus line leads there.

history

The area around Wettelsheim has been populated for a long time. Settlements from the Roman and Neolithic periods , several villa rustica , settlements from the Hallstatt and Urnfields , body graves from the Bronze Age and the Early Middle Ages and a single find of a Neolithic stone ax bear witness to this .

The place, which was probably created in the 5th / 6th century, is first mentioned in 1044 in a deed of donation from Emperor Heinrich III. mentioned in a document. It was administered by the marshals from Pappenheim , the Wülzburg monastery in Weißenburg and, after the Thirty Years' War, by the Hohenzollern . In 1422 a fire ravaged the village and destroyed all records from the time before. From 1757 to 1791 the Margrave of Ansbach had today's Christ Church built in the center of the village. The formerly independent municipality of Wettelsheim included the village of Falbenthal and the deserted areas of Dornmühle , Kellerhaus , Ziegelmühle and Zollmühle . As part of the municipal reform , Wettelsheim was incorporated into Treuchtlingen on July 1, 1972. In 2001 the village won silver in the competition Our village has a future . On April 30, 2018, a woman was hit by the falling tip while the maypole was being erected traditionally and was fatally injured.

Economy / infrastructure

Wettelsheim is characterized by agriculture, but also has a comparatively high proportion of trade, industry and infrastructural facilities. The main employer is the Strauss brewery , better known as the Wettelsheimer Bier brewery . It was founded in 1797 and has belonged to the Strauss family since 1874.

More than 20 associations testify to the lively village life.

Wettelsheim had a train station on the Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway line .

Attractions

St. Martin Church

The Protestant cemetery church of St. Martin was consecrated to St. Martin by Bishop Gundekar II in 1058 and still has frescoes from this period. Its basic structure dates from the 14th century. In the 17th century, the lords of Leubelfing from Falbenthal began to use the church as a burial place. The hall has a retracted choir ; the west tower is compact and is crowned by a tent roof. The church was expanded in the 15th century and in 1656.

Christ Church

The Protestant Christ Church was built under the direction of the margravial agricultural inspector Johann David Steingruber from 1756 to 1757 in place of an old Lady Chapel, about which little is known. In 1866 it was rebuilt due to dilapidation under the master builder Gustav Renner . The polygonal church tower is crowned by a pointed helmet and is located to the west of the transverse church hall. To the east of this is the sacristy and the organ gallery . The church organ was donated in 1515 by the abbot of the Wülzburg monastery and comes from Sebastian Dayg from Nördlingen . Behind the church are the remains of walls and trenches of the official court from the 15th or 16th century.
