The Viersteinberg is 600.2  m above sea level. NHN high, wooded mountain in the Franconian Alb low mountain range . With its northeastern neighbor, the Patrich , it rises near the core town of Treuchtlingen in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen ( Bavaria ). The Viersteinberg ring wall lies on top of it .

The Viersteinberg rises in the Altmühltal Nature Park . It is located directly west-northwest of the core town of Treuchtlingen. To the north-west is Wettelsheim , to the south-west of Ober- and Unterheumödern , to the south-south-west of Heunischhof and to the south-south-east of Ziegelhütte ; they are all districts of Treuchtlingen. In the east-southeast are several new development areas in Treuchtlingen, including the Patrich settlement .

About 2 km northeast of the Viersteinberg summit, the Altmühl flows beyond the Patrich in a south-south-east direction . Beyond the Altmühltal , the Bubenheimer Berg rise in the north and the Nagelberg in the east. The Rohrach, which is strongly meandering west of the mountain, flows into the Altmühl near Bubenheim, a little north of the mountain . The Hahnenkamm ridge extends beyond the Rohrach .

A 570  m high mountain saddle leads over to the north-eastern neighbor, the neighboring mountain Patrich ( 599.6  m ) with a double peak in north-south direction . State road 2216 runs over the southern flank of the Viersteinberg and connects Treuchtlingen in the east past Ziegelhütte with Auernheim in the west.

Natural allocation

The Viersteinberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Franconian Alb (No. 08), in the main unit Southern Franconian Alb ( 082) and in the subunit Altmühlalb (082.2) to the natural area Obere Altmühlalb (082.22). The landscape leads to the northeast and east, past and over the Patrich, into the natural area Treuchtlinger Pforte (082.21). To the north it leads into the natural area Altmühltrichter (110.30) and to the north-west into the natural area Hahnenkamm-Vorberge (110.21), which in the main unit group Franconian Keuper-Lias-Land (11) and in the main unit foreland to the southern Franconian Jura (110) the subunits Weißenburger Bucht (110.3) and Hahnenkamm-Vorland (110.2) count.

Protected areas

Parts of the nature reserve protection zone in the Altmühltal nature park are located on the Viersteinberg ( CDDA no. 396115; designated 1995; 1632.9606  km² ). Parts of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area eaves of the southern Franconian Jura (FFH no. 6833-371; 43.2442 km²) stretch south-west over south to east around the summit region, up to the transition area to Patrich .

Hill settlement and ramparts

On the mountain there is a hillside settlement from the Hallstatt period and a rampart from prehistoric times, the Viersteinberg ring wall .
