The Rohrach is a 12 km long brook in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Bavaria , which flows into the Altmühl from the right across from the Treuchtlingen district of Bubenheim .

Above all, its upper course is also called Eastern Rohrach , to distinguish it from the nearby Western Rohrach , a tributary of the Wörnitz .

geography

course

The Rohrach rises about 900 m east of the Heidenheimer district Degersheim at an altitude of about 557  m above sea level. NHN . It flows in the Rohrachtal, named after it, accompanied by the state road St 2218 in a south-east direction through the village of Rohrach and past the wasteland of Fuchsmühle . Immediately afterwards it passes over to the area of the city of Treuchtlingen and passes through Windischhausen . A little below that, the state road leaves the valley; this turns in a left curve to the northeast. In this direction the Rohrach passes the Dornmühle and then crosses Wettelsheim in the valley opening to the Altmühl. The only larger tributary, the Erlach, flows there from the left . After the village, the Rohrach flows in a split course shortly after one another past the brick mill and the Zollmühle and finally flows into the Altmühl from the right opposite the Treuchtlingen district of Bubenheim .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Rohrach is about 29.6 km², the largest part of the area is, from a natural spatial point of view, in the karstified Southern Franconian Alb , whose sub-areas Hahnenkammalb and Upper Altmühlalb it runs through one after the other. In the valley widening towards the Altmühl, which begins a little before the inlet of the Erlach in Wettelsheim, it flows through the lower areas of the Hahnenkamm foothills and Altmühltrichter of the foreland of the southern Franconian alps in short succession

The highest point is on the northwestern tip in the Hahnenkamm a little east of Heidenheim at 656  m above sea level. NHN high Dürrenberg . From there, along the northeastern and northern watershed down to the mouth of the river, the catchment areas of the smaller right Altmühl tributaries from the Meinheimer Mühlbach downwards. From this point on, the short eastern border runs close to the Altmühl itself, while the area behind the southern and southwestern catchment area border over the Möhrenbach drains little downwards to the Altmühl. The catchment area of the somewhat larger namesake "Westliche" Rohrach , which runs to Wörnitz , borders the short stretch of western border back to the Dürrenberg .

Tributaries and dry valleys

Origin of the Rohrach at about 558  m above sea level. NHN approx. 0.7 km east of Heidenheim - Degersheim and about as far upstream of the Heidenheim valley village of Rohrach . The Rohrach flows from its source to the southeast for a long time. Your valley basin can be traced for a further 2 km uphill to the northwest.

  • (Inflow from the Muldengewann Gründler ), from the right and west to about 556  m above sea level. NHN a few meters after the source, approx. 0.7 km and approx. 1.0 km². Flows at about 579  m above sea level. NHN a pond on the southern edge of Degersheim.
  • (Dry valley Ringgaßgraben ), from the right and west to about 532  m above sea level. NHN after the sewage treatment plant to Rohrach, the Walduntertal is approx. 0.6 km long, catchment area approx. 0.9 km².
  • (Dry valley Tiefental ), from the right and southwest to 504  m above sea level. NHN after the Fuchsmühle , the forest valley is approx. 1.8 km long, catchment area approx. 2.0 km². Start of the valley on the northern edge of Treuchtlingen - Auernheim . Already in the Rohrachaue there is a short ditch fed by a road drainage on the valley axis to the Rohrach, in front of it you can see a short section with a dry bed next to another farm road on aerial photos.
  • (Inflow from the Gassental ), from the left and northeast to about 498  m above sea level. NHN between the Fuchsmühle and Treuchtlingen- Windischhausen , approx. 0.5 km and approx. 0.7 km². Arises at about 529  m above sea level. NHN in its middle valley, the lower course follows the valley road up Rohrbach and then a farm road.
  • ( Troatal dry valley ), from the left and north to about 467  m above sea level. NHN opposite the Untermühle to Windischhausen, valley length approx. 1.4 km, catchment area approx. 1.1 km². Already in the Rohrbachaue there is only a short trench in the direction of the valley.
Between this inflow and the next, the Rohrach first flows to the east, then north-northeast to the last inflow.
  • Erlach , from the left and west-northwest to about 424  m above sea level. NHN on the southwestern outskirts of Treuchtlingen- Wettelsheim , approx. 2.6 km and approx. 6.8 km². Arises at about 524  m above sea level. NHN in the right slope of the valley forest opposite Treuchtlingen- Falbenthal next to WUG 5 from Windischhausen.
The Rohrach then flows eastwards in an open trough, then northwards from near the church through Wettelsheim.

Mouth of the Rohrach from the right and approximately south to about 410  m above sea level. NHN after passing the Zollmühle and below the river bridge of the WUG 5 in the Altmühl . The Rohrach is 12.0 km long and has a 29.6 km² catchment area.

nature

The Rohrach has remained very close to nature. Typical bank plants grow on both sides of the strongly meandering stream. The meander near Wettelsheim was designated by the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district office as a "protected area" according to § 12 Bayr. Nature Conservation Act. The wetlands serve as compensation areas for the preservation of biodiversity in flora and fauna; amphibians, birds and insects typical of the site live here. They also play an important role for the water balance and water quality. The vegetation is characterized by tall perennials such as cabbage thistle , valerian , meadowsweet or purple loosestrife. Reeds and alluvial forest remnants border directly on the banks . These buffer nutrients that would be washed out of the soil into the water without them. The vegetation of the wetlands is also a natural flood protection, it supports the groundwater recharge and promotes the ability of the water body to biological self-cleaning .

In order to reduce the eutrophication of the Rohrach and, as a result, the Altmühl, i.e. the excessive nutrient input into them, the Ansbach Water Management Office is aiming to renovate the sewage treatment plants .
