geography

The foreland of the southern Franconian Alb is spatially limited by the mountain ranges of the Franconian Alb in the south, the Nördlinger Ries and the Middle Franconian Basin . The area is characterized by a wide, heavily agriculturally used open landscape with meadows and fields. The broad valley floodplain of the Altmühl divides the area into two areas: the western part is higher than the eastern part and is shaped by the Wörnitz , the east is divided by the tributaries of the Swabian Rezat and the Thalach . The European main watershed , which separates the catchment areas of the Rhine and Danube , runs through the foreland of the southern Franconian Jura.

There are only a few forest areas. The terrain is flat to hilly, some witness mountains protrude from the landscape, such as the Flüglinger Berg , the Trommetsheimer Berg and the Schloßberg . The highest point is the 689 meter high Hesselberg . The area is located in the Altmühltal Nature Park and in the south of the Franconian Lake District .

The Weißenburg Bay is bounded by the Alb eaves; on the Albtrauf are the highest peaks of the Franconian Alb, which all fall into the foreland, including the Dürrenberg , the Yellow Mountain , the Wülzburger Berg and the Rohrberg .
