List of the tributaries of the Altmühl
overview
The Altmühl has a length of 227 km and a catchment area of 3258 km². It is divided into two very different parts.
On the upper reaches from the source to about Treuchtlingen , the Altmühl runs in a rather narrow catchment area to the southeast to the edge of the Franconian Alb . The watershed to the right of the Wörnitz , which drains into the Danube above the Altmühl , is usually further away, which is why the larger tributaries come from the right, the left runs long before the Franconian Rezat , which runs roughly parallel , before the smaller Swabian near Treuchtlingen Rezat rises close to the Altmühllauf, which makes its more important Franconian namesake cousin through the confluence of the Rednitz , which drains over the Regnitz and then the Main to the Rhine .
When entering the Franconian Jura, the Altmühl orientates itself to the east, but with its meandering valley changes direction several times. The river, which previously often ran alongside side ditches and old loops, now experiences less inflow, which moreover often comes from karst springs. Its longest tributaries also flow into this lower section of its course, namely the Schwarzach , and then also the Sulz , which has since been fragmented through the use of its valley and water for the Main-Danube Canal and its predecessor, after which the one that represents it today Canal itself and finally the White Laber , all left tributaries, the great length and catchment area of which reflects the much more distant position of the left watershed from the Rhenish system in this area.
Today the Altmühl flows into the bed of the Main-Danube Canal and runs its last 35 km in it to the mouth in Kelheim . The water running in it is actively pumped up for operation and a noticeable part is also carried over into the main system, so that the discharge conditions here are no longer very natural. In the upper reaches, too, water is transferred to the Main by damming the floods in the artificially created Altmühlsee near Gunzenhausen . All in all, the Altmühl now drains artificially to a not inconsiderable extent to the Main.
The 12 longest tributaries, over 12.5 km in length, from source to mouth are:
- the right Kreuthbach with 15.1 km and 57.4 km², it flows between Colmberg and Leutershausen
- the right Hagenbach with 14.4 km and 24.8 km², it flows out shortly before Leutershausen
- the right Great Aurachbach , also called Great Aurach, with 13.8 km and 31.7 km², it flows between Leutershausen and Herrieden
- the right Wieseth with 31.8 km and 127.3 km², it flows into Ornbau and is the largest upstream tributary
- the right Wurmbach with 12.9 km and 43.5 km², it flows into Gunzenhausen .
Then the section begins in the Franconian Alb.
- the right Möhrenbach with 19.1 km and 127.8 km², it flows into Treuchtlingen
- the left Treuchtlinger Schambach with 14.2 km and 98.0 km², one of three to four Altmühl tributaries of this name
- the right Gailach with 21.7 km and 78.7 km², it flows into Mörnsheim
- the left Schwarzach with 52.9 km and 510.5 km², it flows into Kinding and is the largest Altmühl tributary
- the Main-Danube Canal approaching from the left has a length of 34.5 km calculated from the apex position above and a catchment area of 226.1 km²
- the left White Laber with 44.7 km and 356.7 km², it flows out at the very beginning of the canal section of the lower Altmühl near Dietfurt an der Altmühl
- the right Riedenburger Schambach with 16.3 km and 138.8 km² flows into Riedenburg .

With stationing, i.e. the flow stretch from the Altmühl estuary up to the respective tributary, the official water body code (GKZ), the name of the tributary, the mouth side, the length of the inflow and the size of its catchment area, the mouth and the mouth height as well as the source location and the Source height.
- In the case of some tributaries that flow indirectly via less significant floodplain ditches, these brooks were (also) named and the stationing of the Altmühl on the tributary to the tributary was overshadowed. Where and how often the stationing could not be ascertained from the official data, an interpolation was made between the stationed inflow points above and below using a polygon on the river. Because of the strong meander run and many, sometimes even multiple side runs, the stationing is noticeably flawed, but reflects the order of the inflow.
- At the GKZ, a separator has been inserted after the prefix 138 common to all of its tributaries, which is the GKZ of the Altmühl itself, for better readability. If no GKZ was available, there is a question mark after the prefix that is safe according to the GKZ structure rule.
- Parenthesized names for tributaries are not found proper names, but makeshift names.
- Most of the secondary runs are not listed, nor are the outlets. However, the latter are listed in the detailed list.
- The tributaries often include sections with different names, especially upper reaches, which are usually not listed here. In case of doubt, the longest upper course was usually chosen.
- Due to the very flat course of the river and insufficiently fine contour lines in some places, the heights can only be ascertained very roughly.
- The catchment areas in the area of the Frankenalb karst area - i.e. from about the Möhrenbach - are not necessarily representative for the water flow. Infiltration can weaken the streams, strong springs emerge elsewhere. See the detailed list… .

lakes of the Altmühl from the source to the mouth as well as the more important named dry valleys in the Franconian Jura .
Mill canals are usually not listed, nor are the numerous small-scale river divisions and oxbow lakes from the middle reaches at the latest, and many of the nameless drainage ditches, which mostly run without an open inflow from the slopes in the wide and flat floodplain next to the river, are also missing. The remaining sections of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal next to the lower section of the Main-Danube Canal are also not mentioned . On the other hand, the large branches, such as the Altmühl feeder, were mentioned .
Name usually according to the inscriptions on the BayernAtlas, length, lake area, catchment area if possible according to the directory of brook and river areas in Bavaria , otherwise usually measured on the BayernAtlas. NN in an old arm of the Altmühl north of the road bridge of the B 13 at Gunzenhausen- Aha , about 1.6 km and about 3.7 km². The island between the old arm and the main course of the Altmühl is the Hackeninsel . This Auengraben is the right branch of the previous one at about 414 m above sea level. NN at the Gunzenhausen Scheupeleinsmühle and just before its mouth it has a longer southeastern stream inlet Merzelfeldgraben , which is about 3.0 km long and west of the village Gunzenhausen- Edersfeld at about 455 m above sea level. - Wolfsgraben , from the left and northwest to about 411.5 m above sea level. NN north-west and (!) West of Theilenhofen- Gundelsheim an der Altmühl , approx. 1.0 km at the first and approx. 1.7 km at the second inflow and approx. 6.7 km². Left, parallel to the old mill, the Auengraben takes up two larger tributaries from the flat left slope, namely the approx. 3.0 km long Wachsteiner Bach with approx. 2.1 km² catchment area and the approx. 2.6 km long Weidachgraben with approx. 2.5 km² Catchment area. NN near a parking lot on the district road EI 10 from Böhmfeld in the south to Arnsberg about one kilometer after the foot of the valley. The water runs Arnsberger Schambachtal , which continues some long dry valleys.

- Schwarzach , from the left and north to below 372 m above sea level. NN in two arms on the southern edge of Markt Kinding , 52.9 km from the origin of the Siegenbach and 510.5 km². The Siegenbach arises at about 472 m above sea level. NN at the sewage treatment plant west of Buch in Markt Postbauer-Heng in the Neumarkt district in Upper Palatinate . Name segment sequence Siegenbach → Hintere Schwarzach → Schwarzach . Is crossed in the middle reaches of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and takes a little over a kilometer from the mouth shortly before the division into the mouth of the arms Anlauter on.

- Quellbach, from the right and south to about 366 m above sea level. NN near Kinding- Kirchanhausen , approx. 0.3 km and approx. 0.1 km². Arises at about 380 m above sea level. NN opposite the village church.
- Seegraben , from the left and west to over 363 m above sea level. NN in a remnant of an oxbow lake in the area of the sports fields on the southwest edge of Beilngries , 1.8 km and 3.7 km². Arises at about 366 m above sea level. NN next to the St 2230 from Kinding- Badanhausen to Beilngries.
- Sulz , from the left and northwest to about 363 m above sea level. NN on the southern edge of Beilngries, 2.6 km and 6.6 km². Is at 372 m above sea level. NN on the northern edge of the town diverted to the right from the Main-Danube Canal . Today's body of water is only a very short lower reaches of a formerly over 30 km long river with an official Sulz spring on the mountain above Tyrolsberg in the municipality of Berngau in the Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate about 29 km north-northwest of the mouth, in whose south-facing Franconian valley now the Main- Danube Canal, to which the ten times as long upper section of the Sulz flows almost 4.5 km upwards from the re-diversion. The Sulz previously drained the vast majority of the 226.1 km² sub -catchment area of today's Main-Danube Canal from its Schwarzach crossing to the current influence of the Altmühl.
- Auengraben, from the left and northwest to about 362 m above sea level. NN opposite the Kottingwörthermühle , 1.1 km and 0.4 km². Arises below 363 m above sea level. NN at the sports fields of Kottingwörth .
- Auengraben, from the right and Wesen at about 362 m above sea level. NN in the right Mühlkanal of the Kottingwörthermühle, 4.8 km and 6.9 km². Arises below 466 m above sea level. NN still west of the airfield across from Beilngries.
Transfer to the district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate .
- Inconsistent floodplain, from the left and west to about 360 m above sea level. NN south of Dietfurt an der Altmühl - Töging , 3.3 km and 2.2 km². Arises below 365 m above sea level. NN north of Kottingwörth.
- East of Töging falls to 359 m above sea level. Altmühl flowing into the sea at a weir at a level of 355 m above sea level. NN of the Main-Danube Canal.
- Inconsistent floodplain, from the left and south-west at 355 m above sea level. NN less than 200 meters before the influence of the Altmühl in the Main-Danube Canal, 1.9 km and 2.2 km². Arises at over 362 m above sea level. NN on the southern edge of Töging.
- Main-Danube Canal , from the left and north-west at 355 m above sea level. NN , 34.5 km from the apex over the European main watershed and 226.1 km². The highest section of the canal (" apex position ") between the Hilpoltstein and Bachhausen locks is 406 m above sea level. NN , of which the section from about canal kilometer 102.2 between Hiltpoltstein - Pierheim in the south and the Guggenbühl ( 456 m above sea level ) in the north, where the European main watershed roughly cuts it, is counted on the Altmühl side; The area also includes a small area on the other side between Guggenloh and Bischofsholz of around 1 km².

Transfer to the Kelheim district .
- Güßgraben , from the right and west at 355 m above sea level. NN in the church village Riedenburg - Deising next to the bridge of the district road KEH 2 over the canal, approx. 1.4 km and approx. 6.9 km². Arises at about 450 m above sea level. NN at the city limits in the west.
- Drainage of the Petrusquelle , also called Petersbrunnen , from the right and west to 355 m above sea level. NN on the southeast edge of Deising, approx. 0.4 km and approx. 0.1 km². Rises at about 370 m above sea level. NN , in the local area at the church in front of the dry valley mouth of the previous one, a karst spring pot with an average discharge of 350 l / s with a catchment area in the west, which apparently also has a share in the (above-ground) catchment area of the previous one. Sometimes there are also sources of hunger pouring nearby.
- Altmühlmünster Bach , from the right and southwest to 355 m above sea level. NN between Deising and Riedenburg- Untereggersberg , 3.4 km, of which about 1.0 km to the right of the canal, and 61.1 km². Arises below 385 m above sea level. NN under the Ambergerhof of Dietfurt in the dry Brunntal above , which can be followed upwards at least another 5.3 km further south of Neuses in Markt Altmannstein .
- Outflow of the karst spring Gundlfing , from the left to 355 m above sea level. NN near Riedenburg- Gundlfing , approx. 0.6 km and approx. 4.6 km². Spring basin at about 360 m above sea level. NN in the local area slightly offset in front of a dry valley mouth from the direction of Riedenburg - Perletzhofen , from where feeding from sinkholes is proven. Pours an average of 35 l / s.
- Schambach , from the right and southwest to 346.6 m above sea level. NN over the town pond in Riedenburg, 16.3 km and 138.8 km². Rises below 405 m above sea level. NN a karst spring in Schamhaupten in the market Altmannstein .
Riedenburger Schambach to the mouth
- Inflow of the dry valley Emmertal , from the left and north to 346.6 m above sea level. NN near the desert Emmerthal, approx. 8.4 km and 14.3 km². Starts at about 580 m above sea level. NN on the eastern slope of the Mantelberg north of the parish village of Jachenhausen .
- Discharge of the karst spring Prunn , from the left and northwest to 346.6 m above sea level. NN near Riedenburg- Prunn in an old arm of the Altmühl, approx. 0.6 km and approx. 1.3 km². Rises at about 355 m above sea level. NN a karst well that lies in front of the mouth of a short dry valley from Riedenburg- Baiersdorf , but pours an average of 600 l / s.
- Inflow of the dry valley Buchertal , from the right and south-southeast to 346.6 m above sea level. NN at the church village Riedenburg- Einthal , approx. 4.9 km and approx. 4.5 km². Arises at about 460 m above sea level. NN at the Kelheimer Einöde Schlott . In Obertal, which runs from the castle to the west, there is a constant watercourse for about 1.1 km.
- Inflow of the dry valley Gerstackertal , from the left and west-southwest to 346.6 m above sea level. NN below Pillhausen before the boundary, approx. 2.3 km and approx. 1.8 km². NN northeast of the parish village of Aichkirchen in the city of Hemau .
- Brook from the dry valley Galgental (!), From the right and south to 346.6 m above sea level. NN approximately compared to the previous one, approx. 2.6 km, of which the upper third unstable, and approx. 4.2 km². Arises at about 425 m above sea level. NN at the edge of the forest north of the Kelheim hamlet of Swabia .
- Weihermühlbach , from the left and northwest to 346.6 m above sea level. NN near Essing in an old run next to the canal, about 0.5 km and less than 0.1 km². Rises at about 355 m above sea level. NN the "small" Blautopf , a karst spring on the edge of the village Weihermühle, which has grown together with Essing . Pours about 300 l / s.
- Inflow of the dry valley Hammertal , from the left and north to 346.6 m above sea level. NN , in the church village Altessing , approx. 5.4 km and approx. 7.3 km². Starts at about 520 m above sea level. NN on the northern edge of the village of Rappelshofen in the municipality of Ihrlerstein .
- Inflow of the dry valley Ziegelal , from the left and north to 346.6 m above sea level. NN at the city boundary shortly before the Kelheim barrage of the canal, approx. 5.1 km and approx. 9.1 km². Starts at about 520 m above sea level. NN at the junction of the KEH 5 district road from St 2233 Painten – Kelheim.
- Inflow of the dry valley Heidental , from the left and north to 338.2 m above sea level. NN near Kelheim- Gronsdorf at the Kelheim lock, approx. 2.1 km and approx. 2.0 km². Starts at about 480 m above sea level. NN in the area of some old quarries west of Ihrlerstein.
- → The first section of the old Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal with the Old Canal Harbor on the Danube side, on the right at around the Altmühlbrücke on Alleestraße in Kelheim , approx. 0.7 km. Today separated from the canalized Altmühl at its northern end, the canal section in the south is connected to the Danube via a lock.

- Small Danube , from the right and west-northwest just before the Altmühlbrücke of Kelheimer Starenstraße, 2.17 km with and approx. 1.7 km without Schleifergraben and 2.3 km². Starts at the Knick Alleestraße / Bahnhofstraße with the inlet of the Schleifergraben , see above, and then also includes the Bräugraben , both of which are derived from Kelheim's medieval city moats on the west and east side of the city center square, which they themselves initially in the south limited.
