The place was first mentioned in a document in 888 as "Sunnemannesdorf". In this document, the Eichstätter Bishop Erchanbald gives the property of the dissolved Herriedener Benedictine Abbey St. Salvator , to which Sommersdorf also belonged, to fief. In the Rauenzell deed of foundation from 1208 a Gerhardus von Sunnemannesdorph is mentioned, a local nobleman. This family was mentioned for the last time in 1275. In 1314 a chunrat from Nazzenfels Sommersdorf had a brief fiefdom, but three years later this fell back to the Eichstätter bishop. In the following years the noble family von Eyb resided there, who built a moated castle in the late 14th century. In 1550 Wolf von Crailsheim zu Neuhaus bought this castle and the Sommersdorf estate. A year later he introduced the Lutheran Confession . Sommersdorf Castle is owned by the von Crailsheim family .

The place was in the Fraisch district of the Oberamt Ansbach . Towards the end of the 18th century there were 14 subject families in Sommersdorf. The lords of Crailsheim held the village and community rulership and the lordship over all properties. From 1797 to 1808 the place was under the judiciary and chamber office of Ansbach .

In 1806 Sommersdorf came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . As part of the municipal edict, the tax district Sommersdorf was formed in 1808 , to which the places Niederoberbach , Reisach , Sommersdorf, Thann and Winkel belonged. A little later, the rural community of Sommersdorf was founded, which was congruent with the tax district. It was subordinate to the Herrieden regional court in terms of administration and jurisdiction and to the Herrieden rent office in terms of financial administration ( renamed Herrieden tax office in 1920 , from 1950: Ansbach tax office ). It originally had market rights. With the second community edict (1818) the division into

  • Rural community Niederoberbach with Reisach;
  • Rural community Sommersdorf;
  • Rural community Thann with angle.

From 1862 Sommersdorf was administered by the Feuchtwangen District Office (renamed the Feuchtwangen District in 1938 ). The jurisdiction remained until 1879 the District Court Herrieden, since 1880 district court Herrieden , 1950 District Court Ansbach . The municipality had an area of 1,882 km².

On January 1, 1972, Sommersdorf was incorporated into Burgoberbach as part of the regional reform .
