Erchanbald (* before 882; † September 19, 912 ) was Bishop of Eichstätt from 882 to 912.

origin

Erchanbald came from the Alemannic nobility, although the relationship with the Carolingians indicated by historical sources cannot be ruled out. The appointment as bishop is likely by Charles III. have been carried out.

Live and act

Apparently for his partisanship in favor of Arnulf , the diocese holdings of the initially poorly funded diocese were considerably expanded through donations. With the donation of the Herrieden estate , its Austrian possessions also fall to the diocese. Apparently as a result of the Babenberg feud , which shook the diocese of Würzburg , Babenberg possessions in the Thuringian Grabfeld and on the Main came into Eichstätter possession. Erchanbald can be traced back to several meetings in the empire up to the time of Ludwig the Child .

He also received the right to build fortifications from him. Eichstätt received a wall in the cathedral district. The reason was probably the incursion of the Hungarians , who are also held responsible for the destruction of the first Eichstätter cathedral .

The cathedral cleric Wolfhard von Herrieden wrote a martyrology and a book about the Monheim Walpurgis miracles on behalf of Erchanbald .
