Otgar (Eichstätt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otgar († July 6, 880  ?) Was Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt from 847 (?) To 880 (?).

According to an assessment by Wilhelm Störmer, Otgar came from the Bavarian noble family of the Roninger . Current research assumes that Otgar is to be equated with the abbot of the Niederaltaich monastery , who succeeded the later Würzburg Bishop Gozbald and received several donations for the monastery from Ludwig the German in this capacity.

On behalf of Ludwig the German, he fought the Bohemia together with Margrave Ruodolt and his son Ernst and drove Duke Wiztrach and his son from their castle. For his services he received possessions from the king, which he was able to exchange with the Regensburg bishop Embricho (also Ambricho) in closer areas near Neuburg an der Donau and Egweil .

Otgar arranged for the bones of Abbess Walburga to be transferred from the collegiate church in Heidenheim to today's Sankt Walburg monastery in Eichstätt . Connected with this was her canonization under Pope Hadrian II. The bones of brother Wunibald were also brought to Eichstätt , but returned to the monastery.
